software piracy/torrents

Post by Jstar1 »

My friend claims that he got warned for downloading torrents for games and that he would be sued if he didn't stop.

is he just making this up for entertainment or is it actually true that the government can come after your ass if you use utorrent, cracks, etc.

because a few years ago my dad broke my call of duty 1 CD in half when he thought it was an old CD that I didn't need. I still had my CD-key so I used utorrent to get the file, used daemon to mount it and download using the cd key and then got online again. Now im seriously scared someone could be tracking me or something

Wait, you need a CD to play CoD1 online? I don't need one, somethings wrong with your computer.

I forgot to say that I was rebooting my computer when my dad broke the cd in half. So I downloaded the COD1 files through utorrent then used my cd-key to play online.

but the point is that I used a torrent and I'm wondering if they can actually catch you

So wait, was it already installed? Because if it was you don't need a cd to play it.

and yes, they can. It's unlikely you'll get caught though.

you would have to be downloading alot at one time to get caught really because if you keep it on the down low your isp wont notice what your doing and investigate or your just plain unlucky

^ this.
Also if it's an old game, chances are very high that you won't get caught, as those aren't cared about much by the companies.
If you weren't caught the week you dled it then you won't ever be caught. Your ISP won't track you they'll simply warn you the first time you do it.

The chances of someone taking action against you is seriously low. I got an e-mail from my isp which was basically a 'stop downloading torrents you ****!' message, but had a little note about not being able to take legal action etc.

Chances to be caught in USA are higher, all though its still really hard for you to be tracked unless you are constantly downloading media 24/7.

In most countries in Europe it dosen't really matter. Like in Switzerland, according to the law which is already quite flexible. A person is allowed to download from torrents but not upload. Which is nice as it is, but they don't really care if you upload or not...

So don't worry.

I don't know about the government coming after you but the RIAA/MPAA would most definitely sue you. They will take everything you own.

Well since in the US the MPAA took all the ISPs to court if they didnt agree to certain things. Theres just some torrents that are high risk, new movies, new games. Course the ass creed i was dling was about 8 months old, and they put a honey pot on it. Basically all you get is a letter saying that they know what you did, and if you continue your account will be terminated.

You wont get in trouble for downloading it if you already own it.

That's why I left out any mention of uploading, because you aren't supposed to do that. Course, everyone does it anyways.

Chance of getting sued is around equal to winning the lottery.
I use to torrent a lot .. not so much anymore, but my brother LOVES to. and when he does I can't play games :[. Hope he wins that lottery.. and my isp lets me keep my connection ofc =D.
Someone make me an Aion-related sig and I will give you 5 dollhairs.
