"More studying leads to better grades"

Today in my Psychology class, the prof said that the statement "More studying leads to better grades" is wrong and that it doesn't necessarily hold true in many cases.

Then he asked the class if they agreed with him, to my surprise more than half of the class agreed with him. There was only 5mins before class ended so he couldn't go further into this topic and so he said that there would be further discussion in this topic next week. I can't wait till next week and I would like to discuss this topic here.

So folks, do you agree or disagree with the statement "More studying leads to better grades"?

i never studied and i still got As and Bs in class...but my mom told me i would have straight As if i did study... idk man i hate moms like that you get good grades already but they want you to get even better than that... ugh its annoying... good thing we had a talk about dropping all that shit when i started college... she went nuts when i told my parents to back off my school shit...

It does depend on the student. Some students are naturally gifted and can understand a subject as soon as it is taught to them. Others do need to study in order to do well on tests.

Grades all come down to how much effort you put into school anyway. Smartest kid in the world could fail a class just by not doing homework. Adversely, dumbest kid in the world could struggle through the homework each night and get a better grade in the class than his unmotivated counterpart.

It depends on a number of factors but in most cases that statement is true. To tell the truth grades have little to do with how intelligent someone is. A person with an IQ of 89 can have straight As but he/she will just have to work harder than everyone else.

Sometimes yes sometimes no, for example
this exam week i studied alot for biologie and i got the best grade in my whole class

Though i didnt learn for physics and got also the best grade....

I rarely study or do homework and I'm doing fine. I know that if I did study I'd do better but I'm lazy. Other people I know study hardcore and still do bad, and some study hardcore and get amazing grades. Then there's the naturally gifted who don't even pay attention and get amazing grades. I hate school.

hmmm, given the responses so far I guess that I have to explain a little bit more about 'sampling testing'.

When doing experiments and trying to validate if something is true or not, generally you would want to have a 'fair' experiment where all variables are constant. With that being said if we were to agree or disagree with "More studying leads to better grades" we should consider that everyone is the same (person A = B = C.... N numbers).

For example (example of a 'fair' test and could be used to further discuss "More studying leads to better grades" ), say student A and student B are intellectually the same and all other factors are also keep the constant for both (eg. same study room, same examination room, etc). Now student A studied 10 hours for a test and student B studied 20 hours. When they get test back, student A scored a 65% and student B scored 80%. With the results of this test, would you agree that "More studying leads to better grades"?

In a 4th year Psychology class if I was to say 'Depends on the student', I would for sure be kicked out of the classroom by my prof

If we consider everyone is the same then this test would have results based only on the 'model person' wouldn't it? That's the problem with tests like these. Everyone's brain functions differently.

Yes everyone's brain functions differently and therefore experiments like the one I mentioned are difficult to reproduce. However, it's always better to do experiments with constant variables and non-bias way. And according to the results you get from the hypothetical model experiment then you would deviate the results to different situations.

A bias sample would be:
Test: Biology test
Person A: Generally smart in science courses. Good background in science.
Person B: Generally not so smart in science courses. Bad background in science.
Person C: Neutral. Never taken science before.
Test conditions: All given 20 hours to study for a test.

You would most definetely NOT want to conduct this experiment since you most likely already know the outcome. You would want to conduct an experiment with either all people like A, or all people like B or all people like C.

Sure, I've had retarded classes with easy mode subjects, but generally speaking I have to work for good grades, and the more I work the better the grades will get.

Studying is what makes the grades in my school. In all my old ones, it would be about substance and thinking, but at my current school, it's like "In the text book on page 497 the book states what?" And then you're given choices and though the book says all of the the choices, you have to choose the one that shows up on page 497.

In proper schools though, studying doesn't have to be done.
Also, you can't test that shit, maybe a kid studies alot but he's a dumbshit, so he'll still get bad grades, and maybe the smart kid doesn't study.

i have never studied and have never done homework, i have failed classes but that's because i either didn't go or went and just messed around. i have never failed and exam or test though. it depends on the person alot. my sisters study like crazy and just match my grades. so

Last year I didn't study and failed year 9 Algebra. This year I studied and got 94% in Cambridge Algebra. (That's equivalent to Year 12 Maths (Yes, I basically skipped Year 10 & 11 Maths)

more hours into studying results in better grades, but too much studying makes no room for sleep which is vitally important to studying would drop your grades.

so not really like a bell because the drop would be a steep plummet

I'd say it depends on the student, tbh if a student pays attention class, there is no need to study really. Last year i got A's and B's soley on paying attention in class.

You mean a parabola? In a way it is but I've gone many nights will little amounts of sleep and my marks still haven't moved. Again depends on the person, heh.

I studied frequently and also tried to keep my day and night rhythm as close to the normal cycle as I possibly could. Losing sleep for extended or even irregular Hours has detrimental effects on you're cognitive capabilities and you're health. In fact, sleep is far more complex. Sleep is regulated by two different systems -- the circadian (24-hour) system and the sleep-wake system -- which, together, determine alertness, performance and the timing of sleep periods. I did slip into fragmented sleep behavior for some time though, but I handled that by paying closer attention to the time and repeatedly telling myself to go to sleep until it became a habit again. I didn't pay to much attention in classes but I still faired extremely well despite the frequent absent mindedness.

It depends on the person. I personally do not have the patience to learn for long periods, but I still pretty much had the same grades as someone who learned alot. It just depends on how good you can learn and if you pay attention in class.

Depends on the subject. I can go through english, history, psychology, sociology and classes like that with my eyes closed. My Chem and calc classes require study. There just no way you can learn them well enough without practicing.

Generally, it does. There are more than one way to study; studying is an ongoing process - not just the part where you sit down at the library and read for 2 hours. Even if it's a critical thinking question you still need to fill your arsenal with the necessary knowledge to have a rationale for answering questions - in my profession you always need to know the answer to the question "why?" for every decision that you make. Your professor obviously has a limited definition of the word "study" and I really encourage him to think back to how he got his diploma. By the way, "study" is different from "review" - for me at least. Either way, both of them leads to a better grade. Tell your professor to stop lingering on such thoughts - he's not fucking Aristotle.

Ah..I miss my psych classes now.

edit: He said "better" not passing. I'm not disputing that you can get a good grade but studying GENERALLY does contribute to the chance of getting a better grade.
