So I'm new to WOW

Post by lavapockets »

I resisted the urge to play for a long time, but having gotten utterly pissed off at the state of Warhammer Online, I moved to wow with my guildmates.

I rolled a Rogue b/c I love melee and burst damage, and I like being that badass bitch who stabs ya and runs away before anyone else notices :) How is rogue at the end game? We rolled a pvp server and I'm looking to do world pvp mainly, city raids, griefing, etc. I'm about 50 right now and the burst damage seems a little on the low side. Granted, I'm slightly pve specced atm, but can anyone give me an idea of what kind of numbers they pull on moderate to well geared opponents at end game?

Rogues are very cool. The burst damage gets better once your gear does, my 71 rogue crits like a maniac. And yes, stunlock, it's just too simple ;p

1. Roll a Subtlety Rogue
2. Stand in front of said Warlock
3. Place face on left side of keyboard.
4. Slowly roll your face to the right side of the keyboard
5. ?
6. Profit

Rogue state in pvp atm isn't uber pro like it used to be.

If you get out pinned down against melee classes in arena, or world pvp for that matter, it's game over.
Survivability has really gone down for rogues since WOTLK.

The burst damage is way over the top, they should compensate it with lower sustained damage rather than extreme lolwtf burst.
It's not exactly hard to deliver a 100->0% kill in a stunlock to almost every class if you're willing to blow your cooldowns.. or just have very good gears.

Rogue used to be a class that could deliver loads of pressure through blowing cooldowns and then be a mediocre dps with a lot of control. Nowadays rogues deliver loads of pressure by just attacking, but rogues have to save up cooldowns for defensive play.

As for the numbers, if you blow cooldowns it's possible to kill any class in less than 4 seconds, which means you do around 20k damage in that time.
Mutilates crit on cloth for 5k and on plate for 2-3k, I've had eviscerate's going for 8k and ambushes for 6k on full resilience targets.

It's kill fast or be killed fast.

lolz! That's my new spec woot! It's not quite as face-roll as the last game I played....but I'm sure by the time I get to 80 it will feel like it.

Nice....sounds like fun. I'm looking forward to that kind of dmg. I got 2 nice mace drops yesterday, so I dropped daggers (and respecced into Subtlety). I get combo points like crazy now and I hit some dude yesterday for 1.8k crit on an eviscerate. Definitely looking forward to higher levels now.

Thnx for the feedback guys. :)

Stunlock is when you lock someone in a spot without allowing them to do anything through stunning them.

Ghost made some posts a few weeks ago acknowledging that stunlocking someone from 100% to 0% isnt called skill, and not very fun to be the other person. Methinks changes were/are in the works (or already happened) to reduce how effective the tactic is. PVP wise, rogues are average I suppose. PVE wise below average, but I guess in the up coming patch they plan to fix that.

Ghosts statement was that all pures (mage warlock rogue hunter) are supposed to be top damage in raids on average conditions, gimick and specialty fights aside.

It doesn't sound like fun for either person fighting, but I can see having to use stun repeatedly on hunters now that they have disengage + frost trap. Getting kited to death and constantly snared also sucks :(

I use a lot of the "stun" tricks in BG or PVP but 8-10 times I see someone counter them in seconds. Do most other builds have counters against the stun skills? The 4 second gouge I don't see getting countered a lot but then again I don't use gouge much except to try and back out of a situation to bandage. Cheapshot, Blind, Kidney, Sap - I see all of these getting countered. Maybe I am imagining it all.

Great example of pvp - 37 pally runs by me on the road and drops a flag - meh i hate 1v1 pvp but whatever I am bored(now I am 43 at the time), I click accept before I think twice, I am on my wolfy, no buffs, poison has ran out, etc. I get ready to stealth and before i know it I am dead (reminds me again that I hate 1v1 pvp) lol ... I suck at pvp unless it is in a support role in team pvp so maybe rogue wasn't the best choice but meh I love pve and I can take down most of the elites(quests) my level (singles mind you) without much trouble. Hopefully through practice and gear and more skills my 1v1 pvp will improve but I ain't putting much thought into though.

I highly suggest getting into a good guild as another class then switching to rogue so there are spots for you in raids. Plus you already have gold & 2 profs so you can focus on PvP profs. As far as I'm concerned you can't do a proper 60 cap 100-0 stunlock, however, it's still annoying as hell when you're locked down.

Don't think every fight with a rogue is like that, especially in arena. Stuns are mostly used for interrupts or skill chains when a member is cornered and you have full energy. Rogues are a PvP class, so if you like PvE I'd highly suggest not starting with a rogue. On the plus side, rogues are cheap; we have no skills to buy compared to other classes. We also level very quickly cause of cool downs that let us solo quests. Just be prepared to have hunter/druids take all your gear in the few raids you'll get into that are not guild raids and not getting many good guild offers later on.

I doubt in high level raids he will have much trouble with hunter's stealing all of his gear. Any hunter that hasn't gone to complete mail armor is a moron. As for the rest of the gear drops, they are fair game. :D

So, now I'm REALLY excited about my rogue. Played my first 70 brackets BGs yesterday (lvl 70 now), got totally owned by the 78 rogue. Like 2 shot owned. Dude ended with highest KBs and only 3 deaths, one of which my punk ass got the KB for, hope he noticed that. Hahaha sucka Lava knows what stun lock is now. Anyways....I just thought I would update.

Not sure if this advice was for me, but I've got my own guild. I took half my guild from Warhammer over to WoW and we've enough for 10 man raids. We're also more geared out for our lvl than some ppl who have been playing for a while :P

Just noticed this and wanted to let ya know you're wrong. An upgrade is an upgrade. Sure, leather wearers get priority, but if it's an upgrade for the hunter, doesn't matgter what armour type it is.

Hunters just stack stats; they don't *need* a higher armour value.

My suggestion quit while you can.

I wasn't completely hardcore, but enough to be able to clear all content in Burning Crusade. And after, can say in retrospect, complete waste of time.

There is no motivating factor in WoW. PvE to get gear. Get gear to PvE. PvP to get gear. Get gear to PvP. It's an endless of cycle of meaningless time dump.

SRO was destroyed by game management. But can say, the motivation for guild wars and having fun at the level cap during job wars and guildwars was far more motivating than anything in WoW. Yeah WoW has more stuff to do, but to me, more ways to waste time and do nothing.

I talk to morons who tell me they love to Raid after spending weeks working on a boss, that team work. At first yeah it's fun, then you start to realize how idiotic it is that sense of accomplishment about beating a scripted pixel boss. Kinda of lame. Going through frustration of guild mates wiping on the same problem and want to scream, IT'S SCRIPTED> BOSS DOES THIS EVERY FREAKEN TIME, IT'S ON A TIMER, WHEN HE REACHES % HEALTH DOES THIS. It gets old.

So in closing, I suggest running away before you get consumed by the numerous ways you can waste your time in this game and find something to do in the mean time until maybe Aion or Guild Wars 2 comes out. Or some other more motivating, satisfying game where you don't need to commit a set amount of hours and days per week to maintain your guild membership to raid a pixel, scripted stupid boss. Another game where guilds can challenge either other to wars instead of stroking e-peen over who has server first kills on forums.

P.S Most disgusting part about WoW, the number or players I met who were students who failed because they wasted time in the game. The number of morons who lost their jobs. Number of idiots who lost their apartment because they wasted time in game instead of looking for a job.

But most incredible, the number of PARENTS that raided 4 hours a night, 4 nights a week. That is just incredible amount of time ignoring their children, blew my mind. And yeah, BF and GF who spend all their time together through the game, was pretty close to that appalling factor.

First of all, I play with a small group of people who actually have their shit together. We 4 man dungeons with no wipes that 5 man pugs take hours to complete and multiple wipes to get through. I know, I've pugged twice and I will NEVER do it again.

I don't waste time in game. I play because I have fun playing. It's a game not a part-time job, the way some idiots treat it. I don't feel the need to be the first person with anything, nor to waste every single night online trying to get something.

I'm also not some asshat who has to go on the wow forums to talk trash about how badass I am. I talk here because I know people are helpful and I've been a forum member for quite awhile now. No reason to go elsewhere.

Just because your experience was horrible due to your guild/playmates whatever, doesn't mean everyone's is. Next time, I suggest you play with more mature players who actually know wtf they're doing.

And about parents, we have a father in our guild who plays AFTER his daughter goes to sleep. He will mysteriously disappear in the middle of a raid if she has a nightmare, can't sleep, whatever. He's got a follow macro, we finish while he takes care of whatever he's gotta take care of. Not really that big a deal, you just have to be a responsible person to begin with.

And the grindfest that will soon be known as Aion? No thank you. Enjoy the hype, everytime a game gets hyped like that it turns out to be a big disappointment.

*edit* My husband and brother also play, they both had straight A's this semester. Again...I think personal character has a lot to do with it :D Good luck with your issues.

Instead of quoting the whole thing again, I will just say amen. I left my first love (SRO) after 3 years because of the complete FAIL it has become and the complete failure JoyMax is. I will not give them another red cent. FW = once every two weeks at a time a lot of US players can't attend and I had to LOL @ job wars. Last time I logged in and spent an hour suited traveling from Const-Sam and then Jang to Hotan and saw nothing, nada, no one. Plus if I did it would probably have been a 90+ botter with sun gear = FAIL.

Now in WOW, I am on a PVE server but on PVP I assume, you are in a constant "alert" mode. But even on PVE, I spend a fair amount of time in Battlegrounds, sometimes flagged for pvp so I can get a bit of that in, I haven't been to WG but I hear that rocks and there are plenty of Alliance -v- Horde encounters if you want them. I spend a couple of hours a night, AFTER my two boys have gone to bed while my wife is watching something like "Biggest Loser" or " Dancing with the Stars". We happen to be in the same room so we can communicate as needed.

Yes, those same people can hole up in their homes losing opportunity, getting bad grades, etc and it can be from too much internet(facebook/myspace), too much phone/texting, too much TV, too much gaming, too much laziness. I think you may have encountered these so called WOW affected people simply because the fact remains 11 MILLION PEOPLE PLAYINGso yeah the odds are you will hear about those personal character failures.

And calling a game a complete waste of time is absolutely subjective and your own opinion. I have friends that consider all online gaming a complete waste of time and money and yet they go see movies every weekend and spent $20. I personally enjoy online gaming and it is pure entertainment for me after a long 10 hour work day, then homework with kids, yard work if I can squeeze some in, ahhhh now some me time. WOW anyone?

You know, I've noticed something though. People that watch a lot of TV, go see a lot of movies, or are constantly on Facebook/Myspace probably spend more time than I do in front of their screen of choice, but it's always us gamers who get ridiculed for wasting their time. So lame :D

BTW, I love being on a pvp server. I can't imagine not being on one. It's really not as bad as some people make it out to be (at least not on my server), and it's so much fun when you get into open air fights with people. Definitely spices up the questing.

I have a full time job that consumes 60 hours a week of my life. I have a life that I enjoy spending time enjoying, and a car that requires constant attention to remain as awesome as it is. I still go to movies, still watch tv, and still have time to play WoW for as long as I do.

I have to say honestly, anything you enjoy doing, whether it costs money or not, is never a waste of time, or money if that is the case.

I do too... I think more of the guys on srf should move to pvp servers. It is so much more interesting to have to pay attention to/for the other faction as you grind. No point being in a war if you can't kill one another, eh?

You know Carbonite (which is free now btw) and has an awesome map/questing feature, actually has an alert system.

CARBONITE: Enemy Gankyoass Is Near You

So if you needed an early warning system and weren't watching your minimap, you can have it. I needed it yesterday turning towers in Hellfire. On PVE servers, you have to turn on pvp to do this (btw even on pve servers I notice a lot of people leave themselves flagged for pvp all the time) so I was flagged and there were several level 60s of both factions traveling between the 3 towers fighting. I was able to stealth out and wait for a Horde pally to show up and we killed a mage and then a warrior that came to help. Then the pally left and I got pwnt :D , it was fun for a while but I had serious questing to get back to so I turned pvp off :( and got back to it.

That kind of takes the fun out of it. I like the surprise of getting jumped. Plus, I always have a pally and a priest with me :D Jumping us is easy, actually killing all of us is hard to accomplish. I die a lot tho. Rogue without resiliance = poor survivability.

i dont get why people join pve servers pvp servers are more fun mainly due to the whole can get attacked anywhere (cept homelands which i believe you need to attack them first)

ontop of that you get lots of raids and shit going on stil no difference pve wise on a pvp server just added fun of pvp which you need to learn to do anyways or your farked in any encounter you get into
