Highschool?

Post by Tasdik »

So for composition today we had to write a response to an ACT prompt that you get when you take the writing part of the ACT.

It was about how since these days people want high school students to have more extra-circular activities that they should lengthen the time that you have to go to high school to fives years, instead of four. Yet other people were afraid that this would cause more people to drop out.

What do you think? Should high school be extended to 5 years? Or should it stay the way it is now?

Give a reason for your answer

High school should stay as is. I've got no idea of this "ACT" thing you're talking about. I know 12 years of school for me is long enough. The only real reason I like going to school is to socialise. Adding another year could increase the rates of dropouts, stress levels and could potentially screw up the curriculum.

Aye, Agreed.

Most of the things you learn are simple and adding and extra year wouldn't be needed. From what I've seen most kids don't even care if they got an F on the easiest shit in the world.
The graduating class would probably only be around 70 kids instead of 150+

See I'm in highschool atm. And I think it should be changed to 5 years.

The way I see it is that most of the people who don't like high school and can't wait to get out of there are either. A) Doing poorly or B) Not planning on going to college. And if they do go to college they probably end up dropping out within the first or second year.

But, for those of us who are serious about our education another year isn't really going to matter.

I really don't think that it'd increase the drop out rate. If you can't last an extra year then you probably aren't giving a crap about your education in the first place.

Also, one of my older brothers didn't go to college until he was 19 *which is what everyone else would do if highschool was changed to 5 years* yet he had the best GPA *4.0* out of any of my older 5 siblings who have gone to college. He not only finished in 3 1/2 years. He also payed his own way through college by working.

University here is quite expensive. At Bond University where I plan on going, my course in Business, Accounting and Tourism costs something like $50,000 for the course and in excess of $20,000 for on-campus accommodation. Luckily my parents are paying for me.

I value my education, and some people don't. They're the people who obviously aren't going to be going on to bigger and better things. An extra year of school would only increase ones education on a broad level. Whereas at University you're able to study what ever it is you want specifically. That 13th year of school would be a waste in my opinion.

Well the 13th year of school is more so for "extra circular activities"

Your right the extra year of school isn't really needed. But people would do a heck of a lot better if they didn't run off to college at age 18 flunk/drop out. Which happens a lot

Well the worst thing about on-campus here is that everyones 18, drinking is legal and people often put their studies behind their drinking :( Especially at a $50,000 course, would suck to waste that.

I think that 12 years is just fine.

We don't "need" that extra year. If you want to go to college when you're 19, then do it, but there's no need for an useless year.

I personally learned everything I think I'll ever need in grade 9. Don't think I learned anything useful in my 3 years of highschool.. (starts at 10 here)
I took full academic courses the first two years, first year straight A's.. second year went to B's then I stopped my science courses and went to basic/general/sped/stupid english in my last year. I was just so bored, waiting to get out. If it was increased to 13 years I would've been so pissed. My parents only had to do 11 years and they're fine. One is a teacher.
Someone make me an Aion-related sig and I will give you 5 dollhairs.
