what is your definition of 'hero'

My school is next to the Hudson River. He is a hero because he didn't kill me.

so technically speaking, ur mom is a hero for not choosing abortion. the asian driver who braked for you this morning is a hero. i am a hero too for not coming for you.

Braking for a pedestrian and having an abortion are completly difference risk factors to landing a plan in a river.

And some people have different ideas about heroism, you obviously hold yours at very high regard.
Maybe you're even looking for a martyr in an every day hero.

Anybody can be a hero, it can be the beggar in the streets or the man in the million dollar suit. Being a Hero is acting without self interest, putting you're life on the line to save or protect those dear to you, or those in danger. It's the disregard for everything else which propels those people to make those decisions. Heroes aren't born, they are made each second of each day. You just have to locate them with a magnifying glass, but they are there.

Using your example of a hero, would that Navy SEAL still be a hero had he instead pushed his teammates out of the way of the hazard effectively saving himself and his comrades in the process? Or would that, too, be filed under "amazing feat, but no hero"?

Are only dead, courageous individuals considered heroes? Just wondering.

of course not, he would still be a hero, he still chose to put his life at risk by NOT running for cover

Sorry bud, but there aren't any real life Supermans out there. Heroes, to me, are ordinary people who go above and beyond their call of duty as a citizen.

but that wasn't exactly above and beyond his call of duty, he did his job. Though this is just semantics really, he saved every one on the plane where as another pilot may have chosen to keep going till out of the city or turn around and reland or failed the river landing

He still didn't exactly go out of his way to help others. but i suppose the title or hero is a mater of perspective

I don't mean to sound like a carebear or anything of that sort but to me, a hero is someone who provides service for the wellbeing of others -- even if it benefits them as well. You don't have to end up in the ER or in a casket to be labeled a hero or place yourself in danger; not every hero is a martyr. People are driven by incentives (yes, people do get some satisfaction out of helping others) and that's all there is to it.

Somethings don't change, only if we let them change. Things like heroism might seem unfitting for this day and era of modern technology, but rescue a child who ran into a busy intersection from certain death and I guarantee you the thanks and ever praise of that child's parents. That's heroism to it's core, and it's sad to see people these days debating what heroism means, or what's a hero and what's not a hero. They need role models from anime and real life events to bring it to their attention. That's really sad, that people should need examples to prove to themselves it still exists. But such is the day and age, where we get judged by our looks and the sizes of our cars. You can go along with the times you currently live in, but who you are in you're core is something you alone can decide. That's what it takes to be a hero, a little gem of innocence inside you that makes you want to believe that there still exists a right and wrong, that decency will somehow triumph in the end.
