Possession of firearms?

Post by Sauron »

Should it be allowed that people will legally own a firearm? Why? Will it reduce the amount of violence if you say no? This has been a heavy topic discussed by our english class and many people have been talking about it lately. Thanks in advance for your replies.

People want guns > can't buy it legally > Illegally imported > Crime rises > New multimillion business is made.

In most US states it's already legal to own most firearms without permits. Fully automatic weapons are still illegal for most people though.

Most states also offer permits for concealed carry, which means you can carry a weapon on you anywhere you go.

My parents were talking about how obama is thinking about allowing people at jobs to carry a firearm in there vehicle but not actually take it into the job. On this we were talking about how they could get you before you actually get to your car and get the gun, but you would probably be dead by then. ^ and yes you need a permit even for this law

Why? Will it reduce the amount of violence if you say no? If they ban firearms from law abiding citizens it will only INCREASE the crime rate.

For instance: Say your planning to rob some store at a mall with a gun. You'd sure as hell would think twice about it because you don't how many people or who has a gun strapped to their leg. Since you can't be sure who might potentially stop you, your probably not going to rob that store.
Whereas if there was a law which banned law abiding people from getting a gun and you had gotten a gun off of some black market somewhere. Why wouldn't you rob that store? No is gonna stop you without a gun.

To summarize: Bad people will always get their hands on a gun. Why prevent the good people from being able to stop them?

How do you plan on doing that lol.

"Oh I'm sorry, I can't sell you this gun..you just aren't normal!"

I mean who gets to decide what normal is and what it isn't?

No, what we need is irresponsible people to stop buying guns. Guns don't cause problems. It's the person with the trigger.

Most states also have to see your ID when you buy a firearm. It's not always required but I know if you're a convicted felon or something you can't own a gun.

we shouldn't sell guns to felons, murderers, people with mental problems, people who have been to prison, etc. I think thats reasonable, because if your sane and not retarded, I'm pretty sure you know when to use a gun and when not to.

That's..how it is now. Just because someone hasn't committed a crime doesn't mean they won't in the future lol.

I don't care if its 10 or 99% of the world. Some people are not supposed to own a gun.

Well, I think going along with what someone else already posted, ( I think Jstar), we should have more backround checks when purchasing something like a gun. The main reason for owning a gun is to feel safe and to be able to protect yourself. If we have less sketchy people buying guns in the first place, then crimes would go down, and the need of owning a gun would also go down too. How this would be done, who knows. It's already a big discussion today, so I guess time will tell.

Oh yeah? Then what about Cho from Virginia Tech? A judge marked him off as a mental patient and ordered him to go for psychiatric help. I think its pretty obvious that people like him shouldn't get guns.

So you propose we send everyone who wants to own a firearm to a psychiatrist to get them evaluated? No thanks.

In the US it's every lawful citizen's right to own a firearm, what they do with them afterward is their business. We do punish people who use them unlawfully, however.

Why not? If you want one you should be able to have it. Guns dont kill people, people do. If I wanna kill someone, Im gona kill him with gun or without it.

Let me ask you this: In a society where citizens are allowed to legally acquire firearms would you be willing to put a sign on your door that reads; "I own no firearms." Do you believe a criminal would invade an individual's private property if they knew there was a high probability of said individual owning a firearm? Take Washington D.C. or New York, and compare their issue with firearms and gun related crimes to a State like Georgia. Guns deter crime. /thread.

No, I never said, thank you. I said that if your labeled a mental patient, you shouldn't be allowed to get a gun, but Cho did.

I believe so as well. Placing something as valuable as one's own life in the danger zone is enough to make even the most hardened and egotistical criminal think twice.

So Cho was first labelled mental and then bought a gun? Or the other way around...Makes a world of difference.
