what is your definition of 'hero'

Post by user »

Apparently many people consider the pilot who successfully landed a plane on the Hudson River a hero. But then, assuming he wanted to live himself, he did it to save himself which in turn saved the others. (For the record, the pilot came out saying that he is not a hero, the success of the landing was due to the crew.)

To me, the criteria of a hero, he/she has to go out of the way (like putting him/herself at risk of death) to help others. Like the Navy SEAL who threw himself on top of a grenade to save the other 3 teammates, that's a hero. He could have chose to duck for it but he chose not to.

The pilot did an amazing feat, he should be congratulated for his excellence but no hero.

yes he saved the day but there really was no conflict in this... the plane was Farking up so he crash landed it, like every other well trained pilot would try to do.
kudos to him for actually being able to pull it off, i'm sure to the people on the plane and their families he is their hero but i can't really identify with it and call him a hero to mankind or anything.

He also could've caved under pressure and farked up the landing and killed everyone.

He's a hero because he saved people where others may have screwed it up. And I know I can't fly a plane, so I'm not even gonna say anything about how difficult the situation was.

Flying a plane into a river is water tight riskless ay.

Great feat + life saving = hero, in my opinion.

He may did it to save himself, but still saved lives. That may be enough.

The Pilot didn't cave under pressure, I'm not a pilot but I'm pretty sure that what he did wasn't an easy task.

I disagree, he is a hero because he was under huge pressure but was able to land the plane without screwing up and killing everybody, or worse, crashing it into a building somewhere. And I'm pretty sure landing a big plane like that on a river isn't easy to do.

I would choose what pilot but,
if he saved lives, then in my opinion he is a hero.

If you were one of the passengers.. wouldn't you consider him a hero for saving your life?

Sorry bud, but there aren't any real life Supermans out there. Heroes, to me, are ordinary people who go above and beyond their call of duty as a citizen.

Well...
We are humans.
We are weak, fragile, covards and so on.

But still, there are moments. When you are scared, still you face the dangers or even doom itself and overcome your fears/limits to do what must be done. Save lifes, or do something others can not, even if you face death or some other grave posiblity.
If you are capable to overcome your weaknesses.
You are a hero.
It does not matter what you do but fot that few second of your life, you are more than an average man/woman and you deserve to be called a hero.

ps: +1 to .Curve

Thread title: "what is your definition of 'hero'"

Anyways, I don't think you need to put yourself at risk to be a hero. I believe the pilot's a hero, no real reason for it other than that he did extremely well and kept his cool and saved like a hundred people. No need for it to get technical whether or not he put himself at risk or not.

Using your example of a hero, would that Navy SEAL still be a hero had he instead pushed his teammates out of the way of the hazard effectively saving himself and his comrades in the process? Or would that, too, be filed under "amazing feat, but no hero"?

Are only dead, courageous individuals considered heroes? Just wondering.

i remember reading a story about a woman that saved her husband and her son from getting shot.she actually died trying to rescue them cuz she ended up getting shot instead. i dont think anyone wud die trying to save someone else's life cuz we live in a selfish society!!

THAT LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, is the definition of a hero
