Mixed feelings about it.

While it has helped to advance medicine and power cities, they do pose a threat to the environment with the waste it makes. That waste is almost impossible to get rid of and is only stored after being collected. They are also dangerous to humanity, for example, Chernobyl.

I wonder why they don't just dump it into a volcano if they are so worried about it. Since nuclear waste is pretty dense, it should sink in the molten rock and slowly dissolve away. I'm guessing the cost of doing that would be pretty high, but it's worth it in the long run.

Maybe because it's dangerous to transport nuclear waste to a volcano? Or maybe because the harmful fumes it would make. I think sending it into space would be a safer way to get rid of. Well, after getting into space that is.

The "waste" factor is a dumb excuse not to use it, people are just simply scared of it. I think most people hear "nuclear" and think bombs. A nuclear bomb and nuclear reactor are nothing alike.

About the waste:

A nuclear power plant generating 500 megawatts of electricity produces around 20 tonnes of toxic waste a year, and this figure is falling as nuclear reactors become more efficient. Treatment of nuclear waste can reduce the volume substantially. In comparison, a 500-megawatt coal-fired power station produces almost 320,000 tonnes of toxic waste each year, including 2.6 tonnes of uranium and 6.4 tonnes of radioactive thorium.

I once read a nice article and they talked about modifying the radioactive waste into other radioactive junk but with a much lower half life and thus decreasing the time for storage.

It's the same as people proposing to fill black holes with our junk, but where does that black hole lead to? To many people just think if the solution for a problem and end up with creating another problem grrrrr

Jesus Christ.
The sun is gonna get pissed off at us is that right? He just doesn't want to deal with our crap. One day he's gonna go home and say to his wife (jupiter) "Honey, I just can't take these phuckers at work anymore. I've been working for billions of years and all of a sudden i get this radioactive BULLSHIT thrown at me! We'll im not gonna take this horseshit anymore!! Tomorrow i QUIT!!" Then JUST as the sun is getting into work. Just as he is coming up from the horizon. He screams out "AHAHAHAHA! YOU PHUCKERS I QUIT!!!" and then he's just gonna blow up.

Funny, verry funny. This is the kind of idea's that tend to be the general fuck-up, thinking nothing will go wrong so just do it. Assuming nothing will happen when you throw crap at the sun it will be okay. There is just one little thing: "Assumption is the mother of all fuck-ups".

Can anyone prove to me that, if we throw all the junk at the sun that it won't have a negative effect on the sun? Or on Earth for that matter. We could assume that heat will destroy everything

And also, what should we and should we not shoot at the sun? We can't possibly shoot everything at the sun, we recycle cause of the resources that are slowly becoming less and less. What I want is some decent arguments to do it, not some fairy tale.

That's why i also said deep space. If throwing something into the sun will have an after effect on earth then deep space it is. Having it float out into deep space or into the sun is a hell of a lot better than continuing to put all of it into the phucking ground.

First, there's no way we will be able to fill a phucking black hole with our shit. Were not going to hurt its feelings if we somehow figured out a way to do that. They eat up stars and cosmic gases on a constant basis but somehow our little landfill trash and radiation is gonna screw it over? lol please.

Dumping in space is not so bad, but fail on the long term. In like 100 year we will be all around this system, also, the costs of dumping cr.ap in space would be horrific -> better transmute them trough other means like ractors and stuff.

Dumping radioactive waste into a volcano is fail too... not all waste is heavier than lava -> if an eruption comes the radioactive stuff would be spread all over earth -> second chernobil(but global, since most volcanos spout their volcanic clouds up to stratosphere or even higher)
This version would cause increased rate of mutations, cancer, etc all over the world. -> worst solution ever(altough there was a plan to dump garbage into the earth via wolfram spheres+mini reactors+garbage in them.
The conception was that the wolfram sphere would heat up to 3000 grade celsius and then it would melt his way down to the lower shifts of Earth -> also too expensive).
Well, looking at GD, i cant say anything but i had to show how is it there.

Cost.
Code: Select all
In like 100 year we will be all around this system

We do the same thing as voyager and pioneer. This is where they are roughly.

Black holes don't lead to anywhere. It's not even a hole.
It's a misconception due to its name.

Basically a black hole is a former sun that condensed all it's mass in a small area which leads to such a big gravitational force that not even light can escape it.

Dumping something in it would mean it stays there, it won't move to a parallel universe.

Yes and know, all we know is that it sucks stuff into a vacuum and can leak certain energy. But besides that not much is known about the blackhole.

As for dumping into space, isn't a solution. We are doing the same thing we did on earth only now in the universe, where did that get us? Nowhere at all,
That's why i also said deep space. If throwing something into the sun will have an after effect on earth then deep space it is. Having it float out into deep space or into the sun is a hell of a lot better than continuing to put all of it into the phucking ground.

Thats why I said, throw it over the fence "Now its not our problem anymore", its a rubbish solution.

For all we know about blackholes, we know nothing. No one can predict what effects anything has on a blackhole. But you, to some degree, got a point.

*sigh*

This thread is pointless.
If you want to dump waste into deep space or even go to a black hole, you need to transport BIG object relative cheap to outes space or travel betveen stars wich implies you're at the technology level wich is needed for this deed.
And you wont travel betveen stars via nuclear propulsion.
Efen small, highly efficient and portable fusion reactors wont give energy enough for you to travel fast enough. Also you would experience problems reaching the speed of light, also, 1 tiny rock in space you hit would cause most likely the death of the entire dumping expedition. Also, you need energy source like matter/antimatter propulsion/energy or even more, quantum energy(it exists, its just you cant achieve this -> theory says the empty space is filled with infinite virtual particles wich could pop out of nothing and also vanish -> if you can catch these little basterds, you have cosmic powers :D ) or small blackholes providing for you enough energy.
OR, the ability to open wormholes in space time and travel trough them in your present, just somewhere else.

So my point is.
If you are at this lvls of technology
WHY WOULD YOU DUMP useless stuff into black holes when you could just transmute them?
Jus because you like that? :D
meh...

They're already developing ways to recycle the radioactive waste. And like I said, the waste produced by nuclear reactors is soo small compared to fossil fuels.. It's pretty ridiculous that we don't use it more often... Fing politics. Just look at nuclear subs. Theoretically they could run 20+yrs without refueling/dumping waste/coming to port (crew would die obviously).

You seem pretty confident yet scientist know very little about black holes. Yes its a point with insanely high gravity, but you can't say, with certainty, that they don't "lead" somewhere else. There are theories of "white holes", basically places where black holes spit out the energy they "sucked" in. There are theories that nothing comes out (like you said). There are theories that the stuff gets "teleported" to another dimension. There are theories that it leads to the pot of gold. Get the picture? We don't have the technological means of proving any of those theories. So they are all just that, theories. I agree with what you say..it all just simply gets condensed into that tiny mass, but we don't know that for sure.

Unstable atom cores could send out nucleic parts, those parts' mass will become energy, following the formula E=mc², that's it basically :)

I thought we where using the " Space elevator" for transporting. Now your confusing me. Anyway, they are making blackholes under France as we speak. You never know that in years from now we don't have to fly far because we make our own blackholes.

Nuclear power is the future, its an easy way to provide power to power nations and
can provide energy for a large amount of time. yes it has problems like anything else.

But its stupid to bitch and moan about how dangerous it is, when ironically your probable
using it to power your house.

Nuclear fusion FTW.

Radioactive waste with a fairly short half-life. IIRC all nuclear waste from a fusionreactor is gone in 1 lifecycle of a human.

The only downside is that you need to invest a shitload of energy in order to create the plasma.
