Sometimes the gate is open but it looks as if it is still closed, but ppl can walk and/or attack trough it. Maybe that was your glitch?

Try use the "Target enemy" button, and you will see it works both ways.
This is not a glitch, just for the more clever ppl ;-)

I see it as a Glitch. Shouldn't be able to attack through a closed door if you can't attack through trees and rocks.

It is a glitch alright, some defending guilds put bow npcs behide the gates and they can attack you, lots of annoying stuns
