Maybe by our standards this is something that is unacceptable, but it doesn't deserve the attention it gets.

Whoa o_o I'm tempted to look that up but I'm not sure I want to =/

One of my professors worked for UNDP and had friends still working for the UN. He linked us to a report that was made that talked about women abuse, and the stuff in it was crazy.

There was pictures of a hospital made just for women that were abused, and there was a ward with women who couldn't control their going to the bathroom anymore because their insides were shredded with bullets.

There's always something worse, but it doesn't make other things any less wrong then they might be.

Do you know how stupid that sounds? so what if she kicked her shoe...no one
deserves that.

Even if it may sound stupid, it's reality. Whoever hits first is in the wrong.

Suppose you are outside and someone walks up to you talking trash, getting in your face. If you push them, they can kick your ass and the police will be able to arrest you for assault afterwards if the person decides to press charges. That person will not be in the wrong. This has happened to a few of my friends.

Wrong, once you have an opportunity, and could walk away without being assaulted or anything, its no longer self defense. If she had hit him with the shoe, and he just restrained her, he'd be in the clear, but punching her while she was already down and restrained is not self defense, that's plain assault.

Agreed, the punches while she was restrained should not have occurred, so both of them assaulted each other. This reminds me of that chris rock video...

This isn't Africa. This is the US. It deserves the news because it's bullshit.

They burn people in the streets in Africa for stealing too, and beat them while they're on fire, I doubt you'd say it would be fine if they did that here either.

Ps.:
I am sort of a math teacher and in some cases the "handing his ass to him" is approved but only in cases of "him". Young males tend to have seizures based on testosteron lvl and thus minor violence is needed to restrain them. Mostly their parents did not teach them how to behave...
Also, this is the last resort with me.
You can handle pricks and a.ssholes most of the time by making fun of them but just as a friend of his would do. Works with girls too.
(no humiliation tough, just to be funny, so he can realize his a.ssholeness and laugh at it too... rly hard to acomplish)

Have to agree with Reise. While the brutal actions in other countries may be completely reprehensible, it's still news when our standards of appropriate behavior are crossed. The attitude of "people elsewhere have it worse, we shouldn't complain" can create higher tolerance levels for unacceptable behavior.

Pointing out the disrespectful and horrendous treatment of women and children in other countries, and being outraged by such treatment is commendable, but don't let that empathy blind you to injustices in your own state.

Was your prof working there during the genocide in Rwanda? That must have been insane if he was.

But it does. Police brutality should be made public, and it should be part of the social narrative, otherwise it will continue to happen with no recourse.

Besides, unless you're watching crap news, you would only hear about it once, and maybe get an update on the charges/trial etc. Honestly, if this was the first place I heard about it means it's probably not getting that much attention in the grand scheme of things.

No it doesn't. But you can't simply blindly follow rules that strictly. Technically, leaning on a subway car door is prohibited yet so many people do it (pretty much everyone) but you don't see transit authorities or cops telling us to stop right? (Hell, even cops do it). I'm not saying that this same idea applies for everything but you have to learn how to adapt to every situation. No one lives their life following every guideline in the book.

Take the 3 strikes law for example, which I believe is in place in California (could be Florida - correct me if I'm wrong): I've watched videos of different cases where people were placed in jail for 25 years for stealing a $9 DVD - how ridiculous is that?! The past 2 cases btw were very minor, can't remember specifically, but all the cases in that video consist of very small non-aggressive crimes. Now you're going to tell me that this is okay because the law's the law? You're fucking kidding me.

Btw, just because I'm saying all this doesn't mean I'm a light-hearted tool driven by a false sense of morality. No. If there's anything I truly hate, it's the fact that certain criminals are free to run and commit similar crimes. I've seen numerous cases where rapists, child molesters, murderers, armed robbers and other criminals were set free by this justice system in hopes that a few years in jail would change them. Hell, a lot of them even get FREE (with your tax dollars) organ transplants and are sometimes bumped up the list. The reason I argue against this pig's action is because the punishment does not fit the crime at all.

On Rwanda:
One problem at a time. Although we can't save everyone, I really think that the rest of the world turned a blind eye to certain nations in the past decades. Lord's Liberation Army, PMC issues, Sudan - you name it. Before quitting Amnesty International about 3 years ago, I've seen some pretty unethical decisions made by the UN that most people have never heard of. It even took years for the issues in Sudan to surface in the US news. History repeats itself - just take a look at the Holocaust.

I started working for them by promoting Amnesty Int. in my local area. It's nothing major, it's mainly for the school but we do go to different high schools for presentation (our topic at the time was mainly Sudan and PMC issues) here in NYC and attend a few "meetings" and presentations in the UN. We managed a few fund raisers as well. I left because I just got too tired of it and I don't agree with some of their decisions and things they've done in the past.

Lol that's why I said "most," I never said all. Muggers, armed robbers, murderers, rapists, child molesters - they all fall under the same category in my book. Btw, it was a bit of a satire, so don't take it too seriously (and literally).

What kind of decisions didn't you agree with? I'm just curious, I don't hear that a lot about AI.
