Islamic School

Where I live, there's been a proposal for an Islamic School. People are worried it will cause extra traffic (my city of 600,000 people feels bigger than NYC with its poor infrastructure), in the already Tourist capital of Australia as well as lower property prices in the area.

Anyway, there has also been protests with people demonstrating their views on the matter. Most Gold Coasters don't want the Islamic School in fear of what happens over-seas in the Middle East. People are often using the saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans do", which NEVER seems to happen here in Australia, nor in the US, or the UK. Are we too accepting to other cultures?

Take into consideration India... if you go to India for a holiday and want to go for a swim in the ocean (don't know why anyone would ... ) if you don't keep some parts of your body covered you can get bashed to death. Yet, people who follow an Islamic upbringing are allowed to wear their Burqa in public in Australia, Canada, UK, USA and other multi culturally developed countries. People say they can easily shoplift something, or hold-up a bank, then use the "It's against my religion to take it off" as an excuse.

Now my opinion on the whole issue is; I don't really want an Islamic school. They should make do with what they have (26 Highschools and 81 Primary schools). Where as Sydney has 200 odd schools for a population of 4.5 million, and we have 100 for a population of 600,000. Anyone who has ever traveled to India, and middle eastern countries would understand some of their religious rules they must abide by.

So what would you say if this Islamic school was being built in your area/city?

well, i used to go to a chinese school here, but we used a high school on the weekends for that.

My opinion on this is quite harsh but, i don't really care.

They come here, they follow OUR rules, they go to OUR schools.
I'd be happy to see them have their own school(s) in certain areas, but in 20 years from now, they will have their own cities? Give give give and get nothing in return except for industrial business.. w00t.

Let me ask you this, if there were to be a jewish or christian church being open would there be the same issues being brought up? Trying to compare an extremist attack and an entire religion is absolutely idiotic.

Well, a Jewish school would most-likely be accepted, though a school rejected. A Christian would have some opposition though considering a lot of people here are Christian, a Christian church or school would get built. They're trying to make the Southern Hemispheres tallest church (Some 100 and something meters tall) where I live, and I wouldn't reject it, nor support it as I don't care about religion.

I just don't believe in supporting an Islamic school, a church I have no problems with, as we have many for each different religion when there's plenty of schools which they can attend that are accepting of other cultures, they just don't have a religious curriculum.

I think people should not compare a group of people with an entire religion. In my opinion, It's just a school, nothing else.

Dubbed the "Thick Sheik", he makes some bold claims on Australia. Potentially ruining the reputation for all Muslims living in Australia. He states Australia has no democracy, and no freedom on Egyptian TV. He then claims that Australia was inhabited by Muslims before it was settled by the British. He even has nerve to slag our heritage. Yet he is living here... in Australia... as an Australian. He had better get on the bandwagon before his limbs go separate ways. He also said that Australian women, because they walk around in Bikinis and other clothing are "asking to be raped" and compared women to meat.

Now, call Australians racist if you wish, but we've had only bad run-ins with Muslims. Whether it be the Cronulla Riots, or their pathetic YouTube videos they put up in an attempt to anger Australians. When we get sick of it, we snap as a country, it makes international headlines and we become a racist country. Just like with Japan, we defend whales and they put videos on their news saying that Australians are racist. They then put videos where Australians are killing sheep or Kangaroos.

Anyway, that's my rant for now.

A school is a school, this is not a traffic issue anymore than it is an issue about ppl fitting in. Its bigotry plain and simple. We've got Catholic Schools, we've got Primarily Jewish Schools, i don't see why an Islamic school would be any different. If ppl are so afraid of them they should be happy that they're all going to the same place.

Getting really tired of ppl hearing the word Allah and grabbing their pitchforks and torchs like they're about to bring down the apocalypse....

Anything that is paid for by public funds needs to be secular; and that's without considering the need for any serious educational institution to be free of religious constraints.

All schools must be public and all schools must be secular, regardless of the religion.

Will the school be receiving federal funding? If the answer is yes then I stand by you; the state should not show favor to any religion for the following reasons:

It establishes an "US" vs "Them" among the constituency.
It forces tax payers to pay for something they may not favor [i.e.] non-muslims paying for a Madrassa, religious people paying for a secular institution.
It compromises the freedom of the school [i.e.] the school will have to follow state regulations. EX: you can do this. you can't do that.
It openly promotes discrimination. If the school can't bar non-muslims from entering then it's freedom is compromised. Then again, it's freedom was compromises when federal aid started flowing in.
It corrupts the religious institution.

If it's a private institution receiving no federal aid it has the right to open, function, profit, and discriminate (or not) as long as it doesn't use force [i.e.] government aid, or prevent others from doing the same; "profiting, opening, functioning, discriminating (or not)."

It would be a Government funded school (aka. Tax Payer school). Paid by Local and State taxpayers. The government shouldn't be one to make schools for religions, because other religions would ask for it. If they really wanted to go to an Islamic school, they can go 1 hour north to Brisbane and get their Islamic education.

Australian schools have very little freedom anymore. My states schools are governed by Education Queensland which tell us what we can and can't do. The Islamic school was only going to allow Muslims to my understanding.

Why is it such a big deal? I really wouldn't care if it were built were i live (Canada), and i can't do much about it since our countries selling point is that we are very friendly to all cultures (seems to be only to people from the middle east since there are so many people from there here), and besides, if i were to complain about a religion specific school then i would be no better then myself since i attend a Catholic high school. So w/e, let it happen...

Not trying to be racist but IMHO if you immigrate to a country you should follow their culture to a degree that you feel comfortable, you should also learn the language they speak and most of all they need to be respectful of the countries culture they are immigrating to. So many times i see Middle Eastern men driving aussie cars with a big "WOG AUSTRALIA" sticker on the back, not cool, need to tell them we were settled by the brits.

Yep. Totally agree. You would know that the Gold Coast is quite ethnically diverse. We're far more accepting than other countries, yet we reject something and we're all of a sudden racist. The wogs do the same thing here also, they disrespect the Australian way of life, and try make Australia their own. Your view opposes theirs? They will rock up in their VL Turbo and pull screwdrivers on you! Besides, in Europe they don't classify themselves as wogs... As you said, if someone went to Lebanon and wanted to make a Christian only school in the middle of their war-torn city you would be dead in the blink of an eye.
