Have you looked into the PSU at all?

My old case came with a junk PSU, and any time the voltage dropped my computer would cold boot.

I bought an aftermarket PSU and this went away as well. After a couple years that died, so in emergency I put the OLD one in until I could go to the store. It still had its problem of cold-booting the computer randomly. Heh.

problem ocurred with old and new cpu...and its not a reboot...just a shut down...computer manages to stay on forever though when in BIOS and Safe Mode...which confuses me further...

Zomg. Virus! Virus?

Theres many internet worms that shut down your comp minutes after its on. They dont load in safemode (and can be removed from your system folders in safe mode). This was a pandemic some couple years ago, even at work we had computers shutting themselves off.

Outside of that, if not the case then you've got some hardware problem, or drivers doing this.

A fried video card or corrupt drivers / directx drivers can kill your comp. I fried my card overclocking it too hard (and blew 5 capacitors on it) worked fine until I ran any kind of game or diagnostic. Then the comp would die.

Bad ram, maybe

Bad PUS, definetly

Heat issues definetly; and in bios screen or safe mode your comp isnt working very hard

occurs in windows and linux...so not related to software..RAM...2 sticks..tried 1 at a time...problem persists...old psu...still occurring...new psu...still occurring...replaced thermal paste, cleaned heat sink etc...problem persists (temp remains below 45C at all times as far as i checked)...tried running it bare bone (just cpu+vid card+ram+hdd)..still didnt work...=(

haha, tried it with a new hard drive? seems like the only option you haven't done yet. Besides, running a friends hard drive will ensure for certain that it cant be software related or a hard drive related error, as both linux and xp may be having the same issues ( despite how rare that may be, but its still something you need to eliminate ).

Well maybe its time you just take it in for a qualified technician to look at it.

Guess that leaves you with mobo / vid card then, if even bare bones wouldnt boot it.
