~Problem playing SRO on Kubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex"~

Post by xk1llx »

The problem that I keep coming across is after the installation, and when I go to run the game itself.

I installed wine and whatnot, and did everything that the installation told me to. I set the wine configuration to windows 98 and told it to emulate a virtual desktop (as directed). I also went to the software sources and set up the third party software and authentication sections as directed. I then installed the game using wine and was waaayyy excited. I then clicked on the game and it started loading. It finished the updating and i clicked start and was very happy to see it running well. Then it took a turn for the worse. The gameguard window came up, and finished loading, but after that was messed up. There was a black rectangle, and the rest of the screen was white. Then for a second the screen turned black and the SRO mouse with a white checkered thing in the background of it popped up. The game then crashed. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

Computer make: Dell Inspiron 1420

OS: Kubuntu 8.10

How old is the laptop? I just got it in July of 2008

RAM: uknkown.

I played this game a long time ago on windows but I don't have it any more, I decided to start playing again because I remembered how fun it was :D

If anyone can help me with this problem, thank you, and if not then thanks for at least reading this.

Hope this is not too late...

Anyway, definitely sounds like a graphics hardware/3d issue. I'm no expert, but maybe I could point you in the right direction.

What graphics card do you have? If you have Nvidia, you need to make sure you have the newest nvidia drivers available and are using opengl. I've never really used ATI and may not be of much help there, but you could check out Ubuntu Forum for 3d support with either manufacturer. If you have an onboard (intel etc.) card you may have no luck. I couldn't get 3d acceleration with a X3100 on my Thinkpad :(.

Also, take a look at wine appdb to see if anyone with similar hardware has had success.

(Just google "wine appdb silkroad")

Good luck, Silkroad will run in Linux through wine with the right card/settings. Mine runs now but I have an aggravating white box around my cursor, and I don't like it when things don't work perfectly...

EDIT:: I googled the specs for your Dell Inspiron 1420 and it appears you have the intel GM965 chipset, which is the same chipset I mentioned earlier (X3100) if I'm not mistaken. I searched far and wide about six months ago for working 3d support for this card in linux and could find nothing, still being worked on. Unless they have come a long way in the past six months I don't think you are going to run this in Kubuntu....just use XP and not Vista and save yourself some trouble :)
