Xbox 360 Connection to PC Monitor???

Post by Heie »

So far, I've figured out that i need to buy a separate VGA cable for my 360 to connect it to a Monitor, now i just need to buy a monitor.

My problem is that i don't know what specs a monitor needs in order to attach the VGA cable from my 360 to the monitor.

Hmmm lets use this Monitor as an example.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824001307

which specification determines that my 360 is "compatible" with this monitor?

Anyone got any ideas?

And if you're wondering why I would play on a monitor instead is because I don't exactly have the space to put a nice T.V in my tiny room :D

It would work but your going to need sound. Now I would recommend Tritton AX360 or AXPRO 5.1 headset. Both fully support xbox live voice chat out of the box.
Does your xbox have HDMI?
(From experience I used stereo sound from my ps3 for a while but it really sucked)

Was just asking cause if you had HDMI you could get a HDMI to DVI cable for like 4 dollars. Rather then buying the Microsoft VGA cable for 30-ish.

hmm yea but aren't HDMI cables like 50 bucks?

anyway, all i really need to know is the "Term" on a monitor that would allow me to play on with my 360.

Lets say for the given link above, would that be compatible with a 360? and if it is how do you know based on its specifications?

HDMI cables are actually cheap. http://www.monoprice.com or http://www.Riteav.com have them for under like 6 bunks max.
HDCP compliant is what you need to check. I'm sure you monitor has it being a SAMSUNG.

Xbox sells a cable that instead of going to RCA, goes to VGA, which lets you hook it up to your monitor.

im confused :?

whats the diff between http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... 1&format=2 and http://www.ebgames.com/Catalog/ProductD ... t_id=66794

maybe I stated my question awkwardly cause no one answered my question.

when you buy a monitor and look at its specs, what certain spec on the monitor determines that it is compatible with a VGA connection to a 360?

My monitor has HDMI at the back of it, i would HIGHLY reccomend buying a monitor with HDMI at the back as it will probably end up being Full HD 1080p :)

yeh but if it's 50 bucks its not within my budget in terms of cables.

i just need to know what spec on a monitor determines if its compatible with a VGA on a 360 T_T

I use my xbox and my pc on the same monitor, DVI for pc VGA for xbox. Got a samsung 2443bwx 24 inch widescreen :).

For the price it is an absolutely kick ass monitor, this is what I use http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824001295

The native res is 1920x1200, but I play at 1920x1080 (1080p) on my xbox and it works great. I then use the fiber optic sound output on the vga cable to go to my 5.1 sound receiver for full surround sound and badaboom a very nice setup in full HD with kickass sound, without a TV lol. ( I also use my monitor with my HD cable box for 1080p TV too) so I actually don't use or need a tv.

The xbox will practically support any monitor with a VGA input, the xbox supports most res's beyond 1024x768, it even supports 1680x1050 now since the new update. Any monitor with a native 1920x1200 res should be able to support full 1080p as well.

The monitor link you posted is compatible because it has a VGA input and the xbox supports 1440x900 res so u would be just fine with that monitor. If you can though I suggest a 22 inch or 24 inch wide screen monitor, because these are really good sizes to replace a tv (sorta a sweet spot):D Hope I helped

Also if your pc is gonna be next to your xbox and u have a sound card u can plug the 360's sound into the "line in" on your pc and have it come out your pc speakers. You can do this because with the VGA cable they give u an adapter which turns the red and white RCA plugs into one mini plug which can fit into your pc's soundcard

ahhhh great great explanation that clears up alot! :)

but how do i know if the monitor is compatible with the 360? i know its VGA but i don't see the term "VGA" in any of the monitors I've looked at

lets use your monitor as an example, the specifications according to newegg says "Input Video Compatibility- Analog RGB, Digital" is it that term that determines its compatibility with the 360?

sorry if it sounds a little awkward, i don't know how to explain in any other way :P

EDIT: i may be overthinking since i haven't bought a monitor in a good while,
so i assumed not all monitors would have this capability.

but im guessing im wrong and that most up to date monitors do?

They are both the same thing. lol They both send a digital signal. Most people fall for that little scam every time they buy a new tv or console they say "HEY YOU NEED THIS CABLE FOR TRUE HD 1080i!!!" That how they profit tons from non-tech savvy costumers.
Here is whats in that box.
Image
Now a little trick microsoft did was the put the HDMI cable under the sound/AV cable. They purposely made it so you could not connect both HDMI and the sound/ cables unless you buy that set you posted from ebgames. Here is a fix so you wouldn't have to buy that cable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FptCB_3DOz4.( I hada do this for 5.1 optical sound)

Back on topic. My monitor is like 3 years old(19'' widescreen 1440x900) and it works fine for both xbox and ps3. Looking at the first link that monitor did not have a VGA input. I'm guessing anything that takes digital signals will work fine.

Sorry about that I misread the stats on that monitor, it only has a DVI input and no VGA, under connectors is where u see that. If your xbox is one of the newer ones u can plug in a HDMI cable to the xbox and use a DVI to HDMI adapter, if not *for example mine is one of the older ones that doesn't have HDMI output* then find a monitor with vga input, or there is probably a vga to dvi adapter out there but I only seen dvi to vga

Monitors that are only DVI come with a DVI to VGA adapter.

thank you for the detailed replies im not really tech-savy guy :D

so are you guys saying that an HDMI cable alone could connect to the monitor without the VGA cable (sounds like a stupid question)?

what i understand so far is that the VGA cable is a MUST to connect to a monitor and an HDMI cable only enhances the graphics.

in terms of the monitor then it is true that not all monitors have VGA capabilites?

Sorry to confuse you lol. Was just saying if your console had HDMI it would work the same as my xbox to monitor connection(and the point that the HDMI cables are pretty cheap).
But like you said yours does not so you will need the xbox vga cable thing. Also the monitor you showed us has D-Sub and DVI, I did a little research and the D-Sub is basically a VGA input. So that monitor will work. I would like to see more pics of it tho. Couldn't find any of the inputs.

Bottom line get the Xbox vga cable and a monitor like the one you posted. You will need a RCA to 3.55mm cable for sound to go to the computer's input and out the PC speakers/headset. Here is a link to one on .51 cents. http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... largeimage

yea that monitor was just an example and now im gonna start lookin around for one.

again thanks for the detailed replies and taking the time to explain it.

oh and one more question, is that RCA cable the only way to get sound? (yes i know it's only 51 cents and i'll prolly get it)

Welcome. You can get sound from almost anything. The Microsoft VGA cable is just like the normal xbox hook up. You can get sound from the Red/White RCA cables or you can use a Toslink Optical cable for 5.1 doby digital. Although the second method will require some speakers/headset that support it(might cost a lot).
So if you happy about your computer speakers then your set.
