PS3 as a PC

Post by Squirt »

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1G6HP6bH1w

I found this video that says that the PS3 can be used as a PC.

It also says that the PS3 will reach a point when you can play high graphics PC games ( SRO for example or Espada Granada).

If this is true will the PS3 out power a PC?

Also if the PS3 really is like a PC can you play PC games like Combat arms or Cabal on it?

People have been running linux on PS3' since the early days. This is nothing new. Unless people can get XP installed I don't see much of a chance of playing decent games on there. Wine on an already non-native system so to speak is just kinda like a brick wall.

Takes 26 mins to load Vista on Ps3. Also you wont be able to play windows games on it because you cannot access the GPU. So without a graphics processor/graphics ram no games will run on it.

If it did work you have a 7 core(1 core not on) processor that is not meant to processor windows type calculations(probably would go pretty slow in games) and 256mb ram. A 7800GT with 256mb ram. Not the most graphical powerhouse in the world

High graphic games like Silkroad.
Seriously?

But really, a PS3 has very good graphics, same as my PC. I'd say PS3 can already run really hardware intense games.
It has like 10 processors, right?

Yes and no. 8 Processors with 1 off. Each doing a special task for the PS OS. It's not a native windows processor(x86 or x64).
It's basically taking the best baseball pitcher and starting him as a quarterback in the NFL. He might be able to throw the ball pretty hard and somewhat accurate but most likely wont do the job better then the normal quarterback.
The graphics power is the equivalent of a 7800gt card which is not the greatest. Yes it would run Cod4, Silkroad, and Counter-strike source if it could.

dumbass

and now to explain why, ps3 is set hardware it will not change from the first model to the last well atleast not specs, its a constant, while pc's will get upgraded a lot easier and more often in newer models

Although many argue its easier to write a game for a console for the sole reason hardware will not change so if you get it to work on one it will work on all as a pose to a PC where measures are needed to be put in place so it can work on differnt spec of pc.

But this may come as a supprise but consoles as early as the ps1 could be used as pc's just didnt give access to the hardware needed to make such a change unlike the ps3. But if you wish to make your ps3 a pc sure go ahead but it has a lot more limitations compared to a proper pc

btw it has 8 cores, xbox has 6 cores. But that alone does not mean shit as the xbox 360 handles it's processes in a much more streamlined manner, so much so its better then the ps3. Messege me if you want explanation on that

Most PS3, 360 gamers think since it has more cores/CPUs. That it will out power a PC, but they fail to see how they execute the instructions. Even though the PS3 processor is a nifty piece of hardware.

exactly their is nothing wrong with the hardware in the ps3 and it could be better if it was thought out

ps3 processor works on the basis of 8 cores and 8 processes, good in theory but here is the problem. if one of them cores finished before the other 7 it will wait for ALL the others to finish.

While the xbox may have less cores (6 fyi) each of them cores works seperatly there fore if one finished before the other 5, it will go onto the next tast rather then wait

but last thing pc often has the tech before the consoles

The Cell processor has 8 cores but sony disabled one so they could save on production cost if a core died. Ps3 has 7 cores running.

dont matter how many cores are operational it dont change how it operates, the fact it has 8 cores is the key factor when talking about it, not whether in real function it uses all or not

High with low (no) AA? My 260 oc'd can barely handle it on high with 4x AA.

well ofc i dont have AA maxxed tbh its only things in a distance you barly notice, which the AA does it's magic on, things closer to the screen shouldnt get too pixelated so no AA or low isnt ok

Guess your resolution also determines what settings you can run it at. Difference between 19" and 22+ is huge.

All of you who say the ps3 can run windows, nope, its not running neither and intel or amd processor, of course windows is compatible with others but not the Sony Designed Cell Processor. Of course linux is easily possible, and linux can detect the GPU, and!!!! and!!!!! the newer firmware already supports other OS mode in ur system settings, and I tell you, the ps3 will never exceed a good pc, a quad core, 9600? 4gb ram, hell no, thats a load of shit. but it does expand the ps3 capabilities a lil bit
