Participants in Obama’s Open for Questions website forum selected marijuana legalization as the number one issue for the incoming president.

A total of 7,300 questions were asked by 10,000 participators who voted over 600,000 times in a twenty four hour period. In addition to being the highest voted, there was another cannabis related question in the top ten, a total of six in the top twenty, and several other high ranking questions raising issues of legalization, decriminalization, policymaking, and medical use. The persistence of these questions reflect how important the issues raised are to a number of Americans who want to address marijuana reform as a means to positive change.

I don't know where I stand on this issue. I am an open pot head but when I begin think about it legalization may cause more issues. Think about how you get alcohol right now if you're underage. Its kind of hard unless you have a close friend over 21 or sweet parents/siblings. Weed is incredibly easy to come by at this point in time. If it becomes regulated not only will it become harder to obtain but a lot of people will have a reduced income or none at all. (me)

As it stands the government makes tons and tons of money off of people too dumb or just unlucky that get caught. I don't know if the gains in taxing it would be equal to what they make off of court fees and other various charges.

Another thing that pops into my head is that a decent amount of people make their entire living off of selling weed. When that income is taken away these people may resort to more violent crimes or selling other drugs that are harmful.

I don't really know though.

I'm sure that there would be heavy restrictions on personal production. The taxing is easy, obviously when it is legalized hemp shops will become very popular, and it can be taxed just like cigarettes and alcohol.

There are also people who brew their own beer. The government can't control all of it, just like that can't now. The point is enough will be taxed that that small group won't matter.
