What if Alaric did not sack Rome in 410?

Post by Shadowfox542 »

What do you think would happen if, instead of marching on Rome, Alaric let the Romans be. I think that the Huns or some other barbarian tribe would have sacked Rome in the near future, but I want other opinions.

I imagine the world would be pretty different today, though Rome would have to change some things as well. It would be better if Alaric tried to destroy Rome, but the Romans got back in time to keep it from happening, so then they realized they actually needed defences in other places than just on the very outskirts of their empire.

I'd prefer it if classical Greek culture never was destroyed and just evolved. I mean, I'd prefer it if Greece never fell, I have some sort of romanticised view of how the world would be, I think it would be great.

But who knows?

Rome would probably have fallen anyway, simply because the legion was stretched too thin to defend the empire, maybe if there was not so much internal politics and backstabbing things could have turned out diffrently, if rome was not sacked it would also have had an intresting effect on world relgion, imo, seeing as christianity probably wouldnt have been so far spread. (or was it the state relgion at that time already? I cant remember lol.)

It was the state religion at that time and Rome would have collapsed from internal political, social, and economic strife. [1]

We'd be under the Roman empire right now

The legion left England to defend the outskirts of the Empire. The story of Rome is repeating itself. A legion spread thin, a declining currency, a welfare-warfare state, propped up businesses, and nationalized institutions. The lessons of the past fall upon deaf ears.

The Mongols did reach Europe; they went as far as Poland but had to turn back because the Khan died.

lol, come up with something new. Rome and the US exist in very different environments. It's highly unlikely that the US will crumble, and empires are a thing of the past. At best, the rest of the world will simply catch up to the US and global security will be maintained through deterrence alone.

The environment is relevant how? Internal Issues are not discriminatory.
Empires are not a thing of the past; they fall due to internal strife more so than foreign elements. Then again Empires don't really fall they change or get weaker until their replaced/re-born. I would keep in mind that the US isn't the first with the same symptoms as Rome. Take the story of France for example. IMO the comparisons between Rome and America are overkill, but the comparisons to the several French republics are priceless. :P BTW; I was just pointing out the parallels. We're far from a real collapse, I think, but the similarities make me giggle a little.

OOh, I just read an interesting article that points out the similarities between failing American Car Industries and the once great American piano industry. The soviet car comparison part made me smile.
