Compression Tools
So i have this 5Gb file and i want to compress it to the least possible size, say 1-2Gb?
First question is can it be done? If it is possible, what program could accomplish this?
I've tried a few including 7zip and WinRar but they simply encase the file into a .zip or .rar file with very little difference in size compared to the original. Am I doing something wrong when i compress them?
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Compression Tools
if it cannot be compressed then it was already compressed.

Re: Compression Tools
It all depends on the files & the format it is in...
Lossy or Lossless.
Lossy = with quality loss; like jpeg, mp3,...
Lossless = compression without quality loss like .rar or .zip
If the file is already in a format which is compressed; u won't be able to shrink it down much using rar or zip

Re: Compression Tools
As said. If it's already compressed you can't compress it anymore.
It's like trying to re-zip a zip file, it's not magically going to get smaller every time.

Re: Compression Tools
Wait, why are you shrinking one vob? Use DVDShrink and do it all.

Re: Compression Tools
As said, either use dvd shrink. Or use a program like Handbrake to convert it into an AVI of a smaller size.
DVDShrink, rips DVD's to an iso file. You can select what sections of the DVD to back up and how big you want the disc to be.

Or use Handbrake to rip it to a video file.
http://handbrake.fr/
You wont be able to compress a vob file only make it smaller by remove 'extra info' like detail/quality out of it, using something like dvd shrink.

Re: Compression Tools
Handbrake r0xx0rs. It's nice to be able to put movies on my mp3 player.
I use a program called "Ripit4me". You need to have DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter but the rest is cake. On my wife's PC (yes, she gets the faster one) it takes about 30 minutes to rip, decode, and burn a DVD. Not too bad.
