Motherboard fried? >_<

Post by AkillerNXC »

Boo. So I'm like 90% sure my motherboard's fried...ugh. Just figured I'd make sure though.

None of the back ports are working, front USB's work though. Computer turns on fine, cd drive works, lights all work...None of the PCI slots work, no video, audio, wireless card's not lighting up...keyboard and mouse don't even light up or anything. >_<

Sooo, Motherboard problem?

I'm guessing you already tried this but

Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc -> OK

see if usb is installed at all, reinstall chipset drivers if not?

I highly doubt that you would be able to turn on your computer if your motherboard is fried.

If it was your motherboard it wouldn't turn on, you would get a error beep or nothing. However...possibly a PSU issue not supplying the power correctly. But define turn on, like you can boot to a OS or just the fans, HDD, CDROM powers up.

Yea I rebuilt my friends computer that did not work, it was the PSU. Everything acted like it was gonna start but no video. Replaced the PSU started up fine.
Try a different PSU, if nothing then replace the board.

I had a fried motherboard a while ago and I could turn it on and everything. After a couple minutes it would blue screen or artifact. My USB and sound ports would also turn on and off.

I troubleshot it and it wasn't the PSU, it was infact the motherboard.

But, it's easier to swap a PSU than a motherboard, so that should be the first step to fixing it.

Yeah, was kinda in a rush, didn't have much time. Was late for work, lol.

I can turn it on, but I can't do anything with it. Everything is running, but I have no video, and no mouse/keyboard. My monitor just stays black. As if it was turned off, (it is on though, I made sure, rofl -.-). Optical mouse, doesn't light up or anything. Keyboard lights aren't on. No sound at all.

sharp234 wrote:or just the fans, HDD, CDROM powers up.

Yeah, thats what its doing. But I can plug the mouse into the front USB's and it works fine.

I've got a 400W PSU, its like 7 years old, lol. The motherboard's only 3 years old. But I had bought a 550W and it blew in about 10 minutes, so I said fck that, I'm staying with the old one.

I guess its a possibility that it isn't supplying enough power to the motherboard, I figured it wasn't the PSU though because everything else would still work. I mean wouldn't it supply power to the more essential or draining things first, HDD, CD, etc...CPU, fans, blah blah.

I'll run down and get a power supply tomorrow, they're closed today. Boo. >_< If that doesn't work then boooooooooo.

If things turn on and your PC stays running then I'd have to say it's a motherboard issue. I had something similar happen back when I still bought shitty 2nd rate PSUs and it burned out one day. Unfortunately just replacing the PSU didn't help, the motherboard itself was f*cked.

If you know someone who knows about computers ask him if he could check it. We can actually just discuss here while he could see what's wrong. But it you don't have the chance... it's most probably the motherboard. I had a familiar issue with an older computer and in the end it turned out that a jumper released on the motherboard (the motherboard was freaking old).

Yea, The computer I fixed had 450w's and it was the problem. The company that made it does even exist anymore. It would "act" like it would start the pc but nothing. Tried it on a few different boards same exact thing.

Maybe a power surge killed it?

Why you never skimp on a PSU, really can cause major problems, 6 years of building. Annoying when your building one for someone and they wonder why you paid a bit more for a good name brand PSU when one came with the case...seems people forget about the PSU a lot..
