Scratched a car =\
So I was parallel parking this morning, or at least I tried to. I scratched the back bumper of a Cadillac. It was old though, looked like 90's. My car is old too '88 Honda. So I parked somewhere else and then after class I left. Should I have put a note on the car or something? I feel like I'm going to get caught and get charged with fleeing the scene of an accident or something. It was a pretty big scratch too like 4 inches long and 1 inch thick. What would you guys have done?

Well I barely passed parallel on my driver's test. Not necessarily a good driver, but definitely a safe driver.

Luckily i never had such an experience with my own car, not because i am the world's best driver, but because i prefer to park my car in a wide spot. And would even prefer a long walk over a closely confined parking space any day. Heck, it's easier on the wallet as well. So here's me hoping you will get away with it.

getting charged for fleeing the scene of you scratching someone else car? get real, that's not a accident they would charge you of unless they got you on tape? i wouldn't think too much into it.

Accident reporting requirements vary from state to state in the US.
The law considers personal injury vs. injury (damage) to property when determining if an accident MUST be reported. Damage to public property (City, County or State) is also considered by some states.
In Oregon, for instance, in a case such as you describe (damage to personal property only) the reporting requirements are:
Hope that helps. Tort law (not Criminal law) allows for a private party to collect damages, but it doesn't seem like you've exposed yourself to criminal charges.

In Oregon, for instance, in a case such as you describe (damage to personal property only) the reporting requirements are:
You must file an Accident and Insurance Report form with DMV within 72 hours when:
- Damage to the vehicle you were driving is over $1,500, or
- Damage to any vehicle is over $1,500 and any vehicle is towed from the scene as a result of damages from this accident, or
- Injury or death resulted from this accident, or
- Damages to any one person's property other than a vehicle involved in this accident is over $1,500.
Accidents in areas open to the public for the use of motor vehicles must be reported. Some drivers who are in accidents offer to fix the damage and try to get the other driver not to file a report. If you agree to do this, you are breaking the law if the amount of damage is more than $1,500. Always remember to keep a copy of your report for your own records.
You must file a report even if your vehicle was the only one in the crash. If you do not report an accident when required to do so, your driving privileges will be suspended.
Hope that helps. Tort law (not Criminal law) allows for a private party to collect damages, but it doesn't seem like you've exposed yourself to criminal charges.

Re: Scratched a car =\
A similar thing happened last night to my sister. I was giving her a lift up the street, i was driving to my girlfriends place and where my sister needed to go is on the way. So as my sister was getting out of the car she slammed the door into a brand new commodore and scratched the door a little. The owner wasn't around so we didn't know who to tell, so i just drove off and she went to where she was going.

Leave him a 5$ tip, and a note saying 'if you need anymore car scratches, just let me know.'

Re: Scratched a car =\
lol, use those little sharpies to color in the scratch like that one commercial.
OT: Leaving a note is the right way, but you can choose other wise.
Just ignoring the problem is, sort of okay, but just don't make it to a habit that's all, we all make mistakes, maybe that person who owns the Cadillac will understand.
Or, that person would cuss, cuss, and cuss

So is another matter if was your own car and Well depends how much scratched the car is, well I dont know if I care about that much if that happends.. but it would be good who did that said something or wrote a note.

It's called a hit and run, and thats not a small crime. You have to go to court for that, and can be charged/put in jail depending on the circumstances.
I think its inconsiderate of you for not leaving a note. I mean, what if some asshat did that to your car? I'm sure you'd be pissed, even if your car is old or crappy. I'm pretty sure you would want to know who the hell did that, and would want them to pay.

I think so too, It really sucks on the other end to find the car all messed up and no one is responsible for it. I guess its a bit too late now, unless you eventually find out who's car it is.
Just don't do it again :p we all make mistakes

Big thx to MasterKojito for making my sig

I feel really bad but I really can't afford an increase in my insurance rates. If I see that car again I will probably leave a note. You guys are making me feel guilty (though I am).

Who says you have to go through insurance, pay out of pocket. It seems like it was just a paint scratch which can be buffed out for not much money.. and you should feel guilty.
Re: Scratched a car =\
Don't listen to the idiots on this forum, there parents obviously didn't bring them up with morals or principles. You should of stopped and left him a note on the car. You don't have to claim small scratches under insurance, you can pay out of your own pocket. I would feel bad too about scratching someones car, but life is shit and mistakes happen. Hopefully the owner of the vehicle would be understanding and you could work it out.

Leave a note, and invite him to talk about it. Also, make him some good coffee.
McCain, he (Barack Obama) said, will soon "be accusing me of being a secret communist because I shared my toys in kindergarten."

Then put some of your "white" stuff in his coffee, after he begins to notice, apologize again, and invite him out to eat somewhere.

Fuck that. He pays insurance like everyone else, and he can claim it or pay for it. You're a poor student and you already pay more than you can afford in books and tuition. It's sad that it happened but you didn't do it on purpose. I think it would be best if you just tried not to let it happen again.
You made a mistake and that happens all the time. It's your first scratch and now you know what to do. Leave a note next time and don't lose sleep over it.
