Wireless question

Post by [SD]happynoobing »

just a question about wireless internet connect, is it normal for the connection to go unstable? (like all of sudden the download speed drops) especially when i play any game? for example, i was doing some speed tests, my normal download speed is ~1000kbps, but whenever i start a game like CoH or some mmo, it drops to 500 or even 200kbps.

yes, that is normal(for me at least) and imo it's because your downloading through your integrated motherboard network card and your mobo is trying to play a game so it slows the incoming flow of data down to accommodate your game.

so if limits incoming bandwidth for more processing pover on games

vouldn't that have a sewere effect on desktops with hardvire internet connections [assuming that hardvires can deliver data faster than vireless]

hmm but i never had this problem before... just started recently, so i thought it might be my wireless problem, since i've always been using wired connection before.

Yuck.

Not right.

Wireless connection of X mb/sec =/= your maximum Internet speed. Wifi is already a little spotty because walls/wood/air/microwaves can interfere with it. So, even if you have 54mb/sec over wifi, that's not your speed.

So, assuming your max bandwidth is 1000 mbit, and you log on to a game that takes up about .5 megabit, you have .5 (500mb left fixed bandwidth) to surf with. Easy enough?

Yeah, it could be something in the game, and Windows scheduling - you can raise the priority of the thread, for example, but I'm not sure how that might help as networking interfaces typically run about 1-5% of CPU usage.

hmm, but the problem is, not only does the game takes up that much bandwidth, it also lags to hell. so i guess a better question is, would switching back to wired connection solve this problem? (if i can find a 50m network cable... lol)

Hard to say, depending on where the problem is. If it's the wifi latency, then yes, hardwired would be better - and in general, I do prefer wired.

If the only option is wired to get it working again. Theres a device which you plug into a wall socket, and you plug it in at both ends. Plug one in by your router, then by your PC and your set.
