can't u use that that f8 menu at the startup to boot it back up to when it wasn't damaged? i allways had the idea it could do somthing like that...correct me if i'm wrong.

The F8 menu is part of the Windows operating system. It would let you go into safe mode, but I'm not sure about an actual system restore. However, if the Ubuntu installation erased everything, then Windows itself is gone too.

I'll assume that during the Ubuntu installation, an incorrect option was selected to erase the entire hard drive, or a partition was formatted incorrectly. So all data is likely gone.

Well it is technically possible to recover data from a formatted hard drive. Depending on the file system, a format might just reinitialize the file allocation tables. The raw data could still be there. There are recovery tools that could (technically) restructure those tables to restore pointers to your data. I don't know of any recovery tools offhand for recovering formatted data or I'd link you to them, but I know they are out there.

Even if you were to initialize every single bit of a hard drive to zero, you could still do a recovery. That's why most secure "data wipe" programs do like 7+ passes writing random bits.

It'd probably be easiest to just start over. I'm just saying it is technically possible to recover at least some of the data. Computer Forensics people do it all the time.
