F means fighter. Just like B means bomber in B-52. In WW 2, they used P for pursuit. Before they shortened it to F, they used FJ for fighter jet.

Lockheed built the F22. Boeing is major subcontractor for it.

I used to work for McDonnell Douglas. We did the F4 Phantom, F15 Eagle and F18 Hornet.
