would you just dole out death penalty for theft or petty crimes, corporate crimes which hurt more people in the long run with loss of jobs. Raping a person is one thing but causing a company to go under so you can profit, isn't that kinda like raping alot of people...
Drug cartels, drive by shootings, gang shootings, etc. etc.
I wouldn't call those petty.
gang shootings and cartels are as much a product and fault of society as they are the fault of the individual. Im not saying the men who commit these are are without fault but i am saying that killing these men for these crimes will not deter or stop more of these crimes from taking place, a change in the social structure must be made to do that. But no i would not call them petty.
Also i'd like to hear thoughts on corporate crimes. Those Enron guys ripped off millions of dollars from the company and the stockholders. Do those people also deserve the death penalty thats theft on a huge scale. What crimes are the ones that deserve death, if you doling it out for all crimes then these must be taken into consideration because they are not petty.

but the tax payer has to pay for their ''punishment''.
do you know how much it costs just to imprison those beasts?
I could certainly be wrong about this, but actually I think it costs more to execute someone at least in the US due to the whole appeals process and cost of trials (see http://www.fnsa.org/v1n1/dieter1.html). So from a monetary perspective, imprisoning someone in prison for life is cheaper than executing them.
tedtwilliger wrote:I disagree completely. I beleive capital punishment is more exacting personal revenge upon them. Don't see prison as punishment but more a "storage area". If someone cant fit in society they should be held away for a length of time that will correct them ( personally i believe we need more correctional training facilities but i guess the government doesn't agree ). And you think 20 years is prison is easy? Have you ever been to prison? Hell its a lot tougher than you think it is.
I'm not saying 20 years isn't much, i'm saying it's not enough. If someone has to serve 20 years, he has something to look forward to: his freedom after 20 years.
But his victims do not, they'll have to live with it for the rest of their life. That's why I think 20 years isn't enough, but imprisoned for the rest of their life is. But since imprisoning them for the rest of their life is very very expensive, and because they are not worth spending money on, I think capital punishment is the best option.

Well, if your still close to being human. Which i admit, some villains are simply not. Living with what you've done, sentenced to life in a prison (not a european one) could be a bitch.
heroo wrote:It may appear barbaric, but imo it's the best punishment for some criminals.
And like you said before, prisons here in Holland are like all-inclusive hotels.
Yep, it's a shame really. They're eating more exclusive meals then i am, day in day out. I believe some TV station once reported about that. Don't fall for the dirt food thing movies always present.
Though some criminals deserve the worst, it kinda makes me feel as bad as them, for allowing such a thing.

Well many european countries have had capital punishment at one point in time, if it worked as well as everyone seems to think it does, then why would it have been removed?
i agree with the death penalty. i think it's necessary in some cases. most of the time criminals get sentenced to life in prison..which is merely taking up space >.> if they truly committed horrific acts, there should be a simple death sentence.
i may sound cynical, but i think it's necessary. also the 'golden rule' sounds great but i doubt it'll ever be implemented. some people are just plain sick...and will keep on committing crimes regardless of the punishment he/she gets.
i agree with The death penalty if the crime deserves it (like : murder - rape ...etc ) and death penalty makes the criminal a lesson for others death is more scary than prison (duh?)
No. Sentencing to life in prison is more practical. Its better to have lost 10 years of your life and then be proven "not guilty" and released instead of being proven "not guilty" after you've been decomposing for 10 years.
You guys are forgetting something... The victims, while a rapist / kidnapper will lose 15-25 years of his life in jail (don't know the number of years) the victims will have a trauma for the rest of their lives which many NEVER recover from.

They'll get over it.
If I was raped I would keep on living my life. Can't turn back time.
But I would be satisfied to see my "rapy" die if it were to happen to me
Spoiler!

You're forgetting something too...what if the rapist/kidnapper is innocent? Then what?
Ganji kinda has a point, specially in countries with a jury-based system, there's many innocent people behind bars. What if you chop of his head, and find out 10 years later that he's innocent.

Give the guy like 10 years to prove his inocence...
And one more thing, what if he's not comes back in a few years (justice fails sometimes...) and rapes another person? Hoorray?

Oh well? You're talking about someone's life being unquestionably wasted for a long period of time while he/she doesn't deserve it. Imagine if you were innocent and spent 20 years in some run down correctional facility only to have your court case reviewed and you being released after you got your youth, your time, and your health taken away from you?

The Death Penalty is a Shameful Waste of Taxpayers' Money, not means the bad criminals get away from harsher punishment, even if they dont get a death penalty. But they should have a life time prison until theirs dead.

I agree on that

I never knew they had wi-fi near jail cells.
I thought prisoners weren't allowed to have PC's

Thats exactly why the death penalty was removed in australia. Back in the 60's some guy was killed and in the end ( many years later ) they found evidence to support him being innocent. Imagine being killed for something you never did and knowing it the whole time...
