India? Probably the highest concentration of vegetarians in the world?

Fact: In meat only can you get all amino acids. However, combos like beans and rice together can also provide all amino acids, you just can't eat ONLY one thing and hope for proper nourishment. You can't really do that with meat anyway since you need carbs and the vitamins that vegetables provide. A vegetarian diet can also include pretty much all necessary vitamins and minerals.

A vegetarian diet also produces less strain on the environment. It takes a lot less land to grow enough food for a country of vegetarians than it does to provide for a country of non-vegetarians.

So why don't you guys all applaud vegetarians and get on with whatever you're doing in your life? Surely you have something better to do than flame vegetarians and non-vegetarians...

Eating red meat increases the chances of cancerous cells forming but it does not speed up the process by which these cells spread. A balanced diet is essential for survival. Try eating just vegetables without taking your supplements. Exercise and a proper diet will keep you healthy. Being a vegetarian does not make you healthy. Correlation does not equal causation. No veggies in a diet will lead to undernourishment; no meat in a diet without supplements will have the same effect.

(I'm only on page 3 but I can't help but replying to DeathBeforeDishonor's "facts").

Been there, done that. God damn those venison steaks and jerky were good.

I am definately anti-vegan, i loooove my meat. Now I'm sorry that vegetarians feel the urge to constantly bicker over their choice of diet. We make a joke and you vegans get all high and mighty about it. Please, try some chicken wings and tell me it don't taste good.

Vegetarianism can be healthy if you really watch what you eat, just like every other diet. But please stop preaching about how much better you are because you don't eat meat like the human's you have decended from. Just go sit in the corner and stuff down a tofu burger while the rest of us savor a delicious quarter pounder with bacon that is just dripping with beef that was made from cows and pigs with little or no sense of self.

LOL that gave me a laugh I so desperately needed today.

And to Answer the other quote: Yes, I can. IMO it's just like asking Larry the Lion or Wally the Walrus the exact same question '~,~. You eat what you want to, just I'd like to see ppl stop getting self-righteous about it and acting like one way's better than the other.

i dont know why people are so stupid.

we arent designed to eat meat. when we see any animal, do we dream or have an innate instinct encoded into our DNA where we salivate of dream of ripping them apart with our hands and tearing apart their flesh with out teeth? NO

even if you are hungry as hell and you see a rooster and try to catch it, you will most likely lose the struggle and if you do indeed subdue it, are you going to just like tear its flesh with your teeth? no, we dont have pointed incisors to kill our prey.

do meat taste good? fack yea! do i eat meat? fack yea! but i eat veggies/fruit a whole lot more. no one is saying NOT to eat it, im just saying to eat much less of it and you will enjoy a healthier longer life free of any millions of illnesses where the world becoming a pill popping place, where every fixes to their health is expected to come in a pill.. whether is be losing weight, lowering blood pressure, diabetes, athersclerosos, constipation, etc. which none of which affects vegetarian :)

Think you should do some research before presenting your "facts." Look at the human mouth, we have four types of teeth: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. Incisors shear food, canines tear food, premolar functions vary, and molars grind food. That my friend is an omnivorous designed mouth.

Salivation isn't an "innate instinct" as you so put. It's stimulated from the SNS (sympathetic nervous system) and the PSNS (parasympathetic nervous system), their main function is to help with pre-digestion; Hunger towards a particular item can be "engaged" so to say by the brain programming itself to feel a "want" for something that you're missing from your diet. Do those greens sound awfully tasty at the moment? It's probably because you're missing vitamins and minerals from your diet.

Humans evolved their brains; compared to other species of animals, we're incredibly weak. However, with the evolution of our brains came the advent of tools to get jobs done that we couldn't complete with what we had available from our bodies. So, you've caught that rooster, why would you need to kill it with your teeth? Our mouths haven't evolved much, but doesn't mean you couldn't kill that small animal with just your teeth. You most likely can be capable of snapping it's neck with your hands, or suffocate it by clamping your mouth around its throat. Hell, a rock can do just as well. Your teeth from then are more than capable of doing their job.

Moderation of everything is the key to living healthy. Hell, you can die if you drink too much water. Reducing meats might help reduce your chances of getting cancer or other diseases, but what if that person was already predispositioned to get that disease? Just have no idea about that kind of thing.

You don't read much on diseases do you? I don't see the relation of being Vegetarian and never having Diabetes Mellitus; Suggest you read about Diabetes Mellitus Types 1 and 2 before stating delusioned facts that vegetarians are "immune" to certain diseases and conditions...

Lets take a full Lion for example, if a zebra just came by the lion would just look at it and go back to sleep, I mean there carvinores yet they didn't kill the zebra? Will maybe if it started kicking said lion. NO

even if you are hungry as hell and you see a rooster and try to catch it, you will most likely lose the struggle and if you do indeed subdue it, are you going to just like tear its flesh with your teeth? Because I have a brain? i would probaly shot it if it was a wild chicken? Then using the magic of FIRE? I would cook it, add some sauce and white rice and mmmmm.... no, we dont have pointed incisors to kill our prey Maybe you don't but I do....

*sigh* I was hoping this thread would just die, but since some people seem bent on resurrecting it...

"Why are people so stupid?"

Stupidity is not the same as ignorance. If you are ignorant of the facts (which not many people here have presented) you are not stupid.

"whether is be losing weight, lowering blood pressure, diabetes, athersclerosos, constipation, etc. which none of which affects vegetarian :)"

Again, can you give us links to your "facts"? Because I don't think that statement is true. Diabetes affects anyone, and in cases is hereditary. Therefore that piece of your statement at least is patently false.

And if English isn't your first or second language, I do apologize but making statements like that and then not going to the trouble to research how to spell "atherosclerosis" (by looking in a wiki or a dictionary) does not help your argument either.

Oh, and by the way, how would you suggest that infants who can't chew or process their food ingest vegetables or get their required protein?

___________________________________________________

Look up more if you wish there's so many it's not
funny.. The truth is vegetarians and vegans are
usually healthier than your average person the a
"normal" diet.. As in meat eating ect..

Think about this.. If I found your dog outside your fence
and started kicking the crap out of it what are you gonna
do? Kick my teeth out right? Reality is every time you eat
meat you just paid for an animal to be go through so much
more horrible things that me kicking your dog.. Why?

Tradition is all that keeps them alive I think..

But honestly even if your kinda sick and don't give
a shit about the cruelty or the environment.. Then you
must at least care about your health right? If not your
stupid and pretty lame.. Either make a change because the
facts are there or just ignore them, pretend it didn't
happen.. Die maybe..

PS in one of those links I think I put it there anyways it says
leave your freezer off for 3-5 days.. Don't open it so the seals
will keep it frozen.. Check it.. It will smell gross and have maggots
all over it.. How? The seals kept everything out.. Yeah it's in your
meat and your eating it :P Yummy, eat up.

BTW, why make jokes about vegetarians? Is it one of those if
I bring everyone else down to my level of self esteem I will
feel better about myself things? or what?

Tell you what - there are not many links that have scientific studies that show vegetable-only diets are better. That's what I'm looking for, not one or two sites that are, well, extremely biased. I'd be happy to look, but I was asking you to provide some, uh, reasoning for your lifestyle.

I'll look around for some links. In the meantime, I can tell you that maggots aren't IN the meat, they are the larvae of flies and if meat is handled properly and frozen properly they won't be there. Not to mention, you're saying maggots (which are meat) are more gross than cows or deer (which are meat). I'm not any more grossed out by either.

Not to mention, maggots are edible too (guess certain people don't like them) but look around at this big bright amazing world, and you'll find people eating things you would never imagine.

huitlacoche, kimchi, lutefisk, etc, etc...
If faith is a crutch, I'm not limping anymore.

so open minded and wouldn't find eating maggots to appealing..

No, you did just fine. As for the first sentence - It's not so good to try to scare people into something, it doesn't work for those who understand (thus, certain "scare tactics" within gov't ala the Patriot Act).

Anyway, a lot of those links are from the PCRM (http://www.pcrm.org/) so a single group. Not bad, but they need AMA/ADA backup.

Some links of my own (haven't had a chance to research the studies as I should)

Just skip down a little bit, there is a study there that shows apes/chimps are not true vegetarians.

http://adam.about.com/encyclopedia/nutr ... ianism.htm
Just to point out, some of you aren’t vegetarians, you are vegans…

Taken from about.com
A person may choose to follow a vegetarian diet for a variety of reasons, including religious, moral or political beliefs, economics, or the desire to eat more healthy foods.
The American Dietetic Association states that a well-planned vegetarian diet can deliver good nutrition. Dietary recommendations vary with the type of vegetarian diet. For children and adolescents these diets require special planning, because it may be difficult to obtain all the nutrients required for growth and development.
Nutrients that may be lacking in a vegetarian's diet include:
• Vitamin B12
• Vitamin D
• Riboflavin
• Zinc
• Iron
• Protein
Protein is necessary for good health. There are two types of protein: complete and incomplete. Complete proteins contain adequate amounts of the essential substances (amino acids) needed for health. They are found in meats, milk, fish, soy, and eggs. Incomplete proteins contain all of the essential amino acids, but not enough of them.
You do not have to eat animal products to get complete proteins in your diet. You can mix two incomplete proteins or an incomplete protein with a complete protein to get the proper amount. Some combinations are milk and cereal, peanut butter and bread, beans and rice, beans and corn tortillas, and macaroni and cheese.
Vegan diets require careful planning in order to obtain adequate amounts of required nutrients.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 937AAWRTSf
http://www.answers.com/topic/meat
Perhaps this contributes a little bit to the reason vegetarians/vegans dislike meat?
“It follows from "you are what you eat" that the consumption of animals will impart some of their animal properties to the person consuming them. Although many animals have desirable attributes, they all share the property of not being human. And it is a major theme, across cultures, that humans are superior to, and qualitatively different from, animals. Yet, consumption of animals, according to the "you are what you eat" principle, would render humans more animal-like, that is, less distinctively human. This belief contributes to human ambivalence about eating meat, and may partially account for the disgust aroused by animal foods in some people.”
“Disgust is a powerful emotion, and animal products often arouse it. Almost all foods that are labeled as disgusting in a number of cultures are of animal origin. It is odd, because "dis-gust" means 'bad taste', and meat is one of the best-tasting foods to humans. It is odd also because, given the superior nutritional properties of meat, it should not be the target of the strongest negative food-related emotion.”

Something interesting to look into (I think I may have to as well)

The long and short of it is this: Vegan/vegetarian diets may have positives, but there are also some negatives. High protein diets aren't necessary for most people, and it follows my own personal theme of "things in moderation". My wife, unfortunately, must eat high-protein foods and cannot eat many vegetables or nuts due to a stomach problem. On the other hand, I know I don't need to eat as much meat as I do, yet it's the tastiest food (not sure how, or why that is) to me.

The biggest problem is organizations like PETA who are quasi-terrorist. You don't see many meat-eaters calling them plant-killers...it's all in how each person perceives plants or animals. Plants don't move quickly, and don't "see", or look cute; or have any behaviors to speak of. Yet we don't know they don't have "souls" (personally, I'm going to say "NO" on that one) so we don't know if they feel pain (doubt it, since they have no nerves)...ahhaha, ok, I can't go on in this vein.

Anyway. Is too much meat bad for you? Sure, and so is too many vegetables, and too much beer, too much exercise, too much work, etc...It's not just the meat either, it's the type of fats you consume and how you exercise if at all. So, for some people eating vegetables is right for them. It does point back at our society and our "rushing around" mentality. Vegetables may take longer to prepare than meat, so we hit the drive-through and voila...obesity starts.

Hey, I give you kudos after the initial "people r stupid" theme, and I thank you for at least taking the time to look things up and back your point. It's been a little more enjoyable this way, and perhaps people will learn something from all these links :P

Nice to see someone actually discuss not go vegetarian is gay
Don't do it 'cause everyone thinks so haha. Gets me insanely
annoyed at people.

I do admit vegan and vegetarian diets can defiantly be bad for
you if you do it the wrong way, just like any diet.. I mean a
meat eaters diet can be bad to if you don't eat healthy.. Both
can be good for you to if done the right way but where ever I
read it tells me that vegetarian/vegan diets will generally be
better if they are done the right way but maybe it's me looking
in the wrong place..

My reason for no eating meat and supporting any animal products
is simply because most times before it got to you an animal suffered
unnecessarily so a company could produce more in less time for the
least cost. That disgusts me, also I see it as a form of exploitation..
Kinda like slavery I guess, I mean the animal kept against their will
I'm assuming they would rather be in a paddock or what ever.. And
treated quite terribly in a lot of cases for someone else's benefit..
I loved the taste of pretty much everything meat/dairy related.. But
after seeing the cruelty videos I just didn't wanna be apart of it.

I think the reason for meat been seen as disgusting to some people
is basically my reason of been vegan. Even though it might be a tasty
convenient source of iron and protein. Disgust can be used in different
ways I guess.. Meat might be disgusting for it's origin not it's
properties if that makes sence.. I'm not a very bright kid haha.

As for the plant thing.. I read that plants can feel pain to some
extent like they will try to move away from something trying to
harm them.. So in fact they feel some degree of pain but personally
I doubt they have something like a brain to process and don't have the
nerves to feel pain like we or animals do.. I think it's more of a
survival instinct thing.. But I'm not even sure how true it is..

Any ways my arguements probably sound gay, I'm a 16yr old drop out,
I'm not to good with words or explaining what I'm trying to say haha.
But I know what's right for me, I know where I stand and I'm not trying
to force my lifestyle onto everyone else but I'd rather try and "wake"
people up to some of the stuff that happens.. It really is sick..
I mean I never knew how horrible it was.. I thought it was cow sits in
a paddock for awhile.. Gets on a train/truck.. Gets shot but that's not
the case at all. They do endure a lot more things and I think it's pretty
sad that we let it happen because it tastes good or it's easy to get to.
But then again I see things a lot different to nearly everyone I know and
I'm a pretty negative person towards the way society works and a lot of
other things that are probably just human nature or something..

And haha at the Diablo 2 screen shot, I played that game a few times but
you still suck for saying what you say :P

I didn't read the whole of all of your links, I'm pretty tired and it's
late here so I'm gonna go to bed. Talk more Tomorrow :)

India? Probably the highest concentration of vegetarians in the world?

That's not what i meant to say.

What the fuck are you talking about?

A vegetarian diet also produces less strain on the environment. It takes a lot less land to grow enough food for a country of vegetarians than it does to provide for a country of non-vegetarians.

What are you,Amish? You whore Agriculture ?

So why don't you guys all applaud vegetarians and get on with whatever you're doing in your life? Surely you have something better to do than flame vegetarians and non-vegetarians...

I saw a Veggie once, then he turned to the side and i lost track of him.
