Slightly Computerish, but this seems to happen with SRO more

Post by Goseki »

I'm running intel centrino duo, vista, hp labtop. 2 gigs memory. So i notice that randomly, but more often while running sro and doing stuff like dashing or hitting, my hard drive, the main one on the left, makes a VERY LOUD BEEP. It lasts for about 2-5 secs. Any ideas? Something broken???

copy paste from google:

You need to turn OFF your Filter Key option for beeping key strokes.
1) Go to START > Control Panel > Accessibility Options
2) In the window Accessibility Options > select the tab Keyboard
3) Under frame FILTER KEYS, select button SETTINGS
4) In the window Settings For FilterKeys > under NOTIFICATION >
5) UNcheck "Beep when keys pressed or accepted".

no clue if its the same for vista but does work on xp

I'll try that, but i don't think that's the problem. The sound is coming from the hd itself. I can't tell if it's a normal noise that comes when the hd is overheated, or if its the error beeps that come from the hd itself.

During, or a few seconds before the beep, does your screen freeze or FPS get really low?

Okay, I think it's either a RAM issue or your harddrive is being overworked.
I've had the same problem when running lots of programs and browsing these forums, twice in the last week actually.
Have you manually set up your virtual memory as I have?
If you're only running silkroad when it happens.. try this,
go to start, run, dxdiag and see if your computer is recognizing all of your ram.
If it is.. what kind of video adapter do you have? Just integrated laptop shiz? (laptop=labtop.. right? I honestly don't have much experience with laptops)

That's all I can think of for ram useage, let's move on to harddrive.. Well there shouldn't be much room in there - can you feel an unusual amount of heat coming from it?
Do a defragment if you haven't. (start, accessories, system tools, disk defragment -- may be different for vista, again not much experience.. I'm a XP guy)

Here's something from google:
On the desktop right click "My computer"(If my computer is not on desktop you will find it in the start menu) and select properties.
Hit the hardware tab.
Select device manager.
In device manager scroll down to "Disk Drives" and click the + sign beside it.
It should tell you what you hard drive name is. Then you could google it.

You could also install Belarc http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Download and install - it will give you a readout of you computer specs.

If its a harware issue like disk drive the diagnostic will pick it up even if the hard drive is not beeping, so run the diagnostic anyway.

It may well be software related but if you're worried, download and run the hard drive manafacturer's utility tools to test the integrity of the drive. It will be a good indication if the drive is beginning to fail.

Guess that's it for now.. make sure you reply with an update!

I use to think it was me overworking my hd. but it has also happened when i just start my computer too. The hd area does get hot, but it heats up pretty fast since hp uses very thin plastic and the hd is RIGHT underneath it. it gets warm. not hot actually. The defrag are auto done when i'm stalling at night... I do leave sro on for days on ends sometimes >_>. But overall it seems fine. Just that random beep that coems when the comp is hot, when it's cool. whenever it wants.

dont buttonbash when your pc freezes, if im right, the beep is from your CPU, which all cant handle it anymore, so when you freeze, HAVE FCKIN PATIENCE. Oke, np.

Hard drives do not have speakers on them, so they would not generate a "beep" sound. Perhaps a ticking sound. The tower that your hard drive (as well as everything else) is in has a speaker (not your external speakers that SRO music comes from. If internal tower speaker is making a beep, it's probably because of pressing (or holding) too many buttons too long. Maybe the Sticky Keys feature someone mentioned.

No, i def turned off sticky and filter key option. It's something else. I've googled it and it said hp has a beep sequence it uses when hd has issues. Unfortunately nothing matches the long beep.... the beep code is in short sequences. I never found anything referring to a long 3-5 sec beep.

Check out this page http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml for beep code descriptions. I didn't look through the entire thing, but one entry states:

Continuous beep Power supply, system board, or keyboard problem

I don't know if they mean continuous beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep, or continuous beep beep beep beep beep.....

Maybe the page has other useful info for you.

I checked that page. I'm running Phoenix BIOS. The beep error sequence are are consisting of 3 beeps. None of them have just 1 long beep. ><' This is really annoying. I can't tell if it's normal or something's farked.

Just 3 beeps? Not 3 beeps, pause, more beeps, pause.... maybe 1 beep, pause, 3 beeps, etc?

At any rate, I'm not sure if these BIOS beeps would happen while the computer is up and running. I know they will occur when you first hit the power switch to turn the computer on if something is wrong.
