Keep in mind that the 2 diffrent sets of servers ,east and west, arent for ping (all servers are in california), but for event purposes. 2 diffrent sets of times of when the events will occur, depending on where you are. The west servers are based on pacific time, while the east servers are EST.

I doubt this will make much of a diffrence until open beta anyway as events will be minimal in closed beta.

Time zones differ a lot in North America. Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern, Atlantic, Newfoundland. When talking in terms of servers, it's a 100+ ping difference. The reason for that is simple, the highest population density in the West, is towards the south; and in the East, it's in the North.

But, if you're right, that can be completely thrown out. It's important because the vast majority of gamers are still in school, or at work. The difference of 4 hours means that either the players in the East will have to stay up into the morning hours to participate in fixed events, while the ones in the West will have to participate in the early afternoon (while at work or school). You may argue that events aren't always set at a fixed time, but extend over a duration of days. That might be true, but big group events, organized by guilds, are always set at a certain time. To make it easier and able guilds to compete against eachother, an East/West setup is required.

The great thing about having that difference is that if you're a West player that works nights, it might be easier to play with Eastern players. It's not mandatory to play on a server, it's a choice. And giving players the choice of playing when they want and having access to content is important for the success of the game.
