It was my son and he had a question, "Do you think it would be disrespectful for me to bring a loaded gun over to your house?"

My reply: "I don't know how to think about that. Are you going to kill me? That would be disrespectful."

Ahhhh... just another moment in the life. I really don't understand some things, guess he was just wondering what I thought.

It got me to wondering though. My son has a 75lb weight advantage over me, but I am much, much faster. He wears a shoulder harness for his weapon, a Sig-Sauer (not sure of the spelling, Australian weap). If he were to reach with his right hand toward his weapon it would be possible (in my estimation) for me to quickly grab his wrist, turn it slightly outward and try a pin near his right shoulder to trap the gun under his neck. Then it should be just a matter of elevating his elbow to the point of disarming him and continuing with that motion transitioning into a takedown.

He's a pretty large fellow but not quick on his feet. Now, let me say that I would and do trust him with my life and there would never (except in my imagination) be any possibility of this happening. Maybe I'll ask him to play act it with me (unarmed of course) and not tell him my 'move' just to see. He's coming over in about 15 mins so we can go to work out together and I'll measure his playfulness -- maybe, maybe not. At the moment, it's shower time. Back later.

Depending on your speed it would be highly possible for you to dissarm him. That is if you know when hes gona do it. If not you would have to take in to consideration your reflexes.

"There's only one problem with that..." he replied, and drew out his Cold Steel Tri-Lite tactical folding knife to demonstrate. I looked at his $150 dollar secondary weapon and it reminded me of a 1950's switchblade. It unfolded as he drew it from his left front pants pocket and I admitted he was right. We shouldn't fight.

Is there any area these days free from danger? Doubtful. Take a look at the crime statistics for your area (especially if you are in the US).

To continue the story when my son got here and while I was taking the pic -- he told me about his trip to my house. While waiting at a bus stop a tweaker began a conversation. The guy had needle marks on both his arms and was quite jittery. He went on and on about various drugs (speed, speedballs, smack, etc.) and my son was wary. The way he told the story was that he kept on thinking and wishing that he would have chambered a bullet before he left his house. As the 'tweaker' was talking and getting more and more animated my son maneuvered to keep a light pole between them and remained in a semi-passive stance. The guy noticed his maneuvers and asked, "What's the matter with you, dude - you seem anxious." He had been cursing the cops and just told my boy he was released from jail yesterday. My son was worried that he might be 'bum-rushed'. Then the tweaker saw the bus coming and turned to run away.

To answer your question, no - the area I live in doesn't seem to be unsafe - you know, a normal middle to upper income US type city - suburbia. I'm not afraid to take walks at night and can't remember any confrontations. I am very aware of my surroundings though and do pay attention to those around me. But have you read the newspapers recently? Daylight home breaks-ins? My son has his concealed weapons permit and is very level headed. He has no children and keeps his weapons trigger locked and in the locked case when not in use.

Why would he come to my house armed? Not sure, but it doesn't matter much to me. I'm as comfortable with him here as I am alone. By the way, I also own a couple weapons and was thinking about playing a little joke on him.

All it would take would be for me to unlock and open my door slightly before he got here. I can almost see him standing at my doorstep, hesitating, knocking, calling out, "Dad?". I really doubt that he would enter without first calling on his cellphone. He does know me, after all. I live alone, no women in my house with me so I have a half dozen or so weapons within my reach right now. If you're familiar with Koppo and Yawara sticks you'd know what I mean but wouldn't notice if you were here with me even if you were looking. My place is completely 100% baby proof when the grand-kids come over but still...

I think he'd like to own a gunshop eventually. We're currently working on restoring a beatup old shotgun he picked up for $35 US. Pretty sure we can turn it around and sell for $150 or so without much effort. My boy has volunteered thousands of hours in Search and Rescue (me too, but not thousands) while he was in high school and is an ex-marine. Maybe I should've mentioned that?

UPDATE:

Thought I'd update with the continuing story of later that evening.
I gave my son a ride home, not wanting to have him exposed to the dangers of bus travel twice in one day and on the way home he told me a story about the raccoons near his apartment. He also asked if we could stop at Wal-Mart.

There are two types of raccoons in my book. The bad and the worse. His was the worse. They had a little raccoon gang going on (complete with raccoon gang signs and graffiti) and they were being very aggressive. So far, no pets had died but they were constantly rummaging around and being very confrontational with humans, perhaps my son especially.

Here's how it went down:
The boy was on his 2nd story balcony when the last altercation occurred. They began the "fight" when he hissed at the animal, who was busy scrounging for food. Much to my son's surprise, the large male raccoon reared up and hissed right back Hence, the trip to Wal-Mart. He wanted to buy a sling-shot. He had already phoned the police to ask if it was lawful to discharge a weapon in self defense against a possibly rabid animal.

The police were having none of his non-sense and just told him to call animal control, but by that time it had gotten personal. Not only did the arrogant raccoon hiss back, but when my son hit him smack in the side with a full can of beer, knocking the poor animal over... the evil creature began to run away... then... It turned around, grabbed the beer can, and made his way into the woods.

While in Wal-Mart, we discussed the obvious plot that the raccoons had for taking over the world and selected from several types of ammo. When I suggested that we consider buying lead weights used in deep sea fishing the boy just laughed at me, saying it was 'overkill'.

NOW WAIT JUST A SECOND! Overkill? I wasn't the one who called the police and asked if discharging a shottie within city limits was illegal. I do know the magic words, "It was coming at me," and would never tip my hat by making a recorded phone call. Sheesh... Overkill indeed.

Okay, so today... while on the phone I asked about his battle for world domination against the raccoons and he said he hadn't seen them since the last time when the leader stole the can of beer. Seems to me we may have discovered the path to world peace?

Bomb our enemies with Coors, right?

I mean, your son's first reaction to an ex-con jumping around was wishing he chambered a bullet in his gun.
A lot of people feel more powerful when carrying a gun and although you will probably deny it's the same for your son I believe it is.

There's a show on the military channel that was showing how the people in special forces have superior physiological qualities compared to the average person. One of them was able to move his hand like 2 feet and push the pistol away before the gunman could even react/fire the pistol...or something like that.
