Xemnas is entirely correct. English is the way it is because of its inclusiveness of other languages and cultures. English vocabulary is much larger than your average language because we have several words to describe the same thing, depending on the derivation of the word.
A good example is "ghost" and "spirit". "Ghost" predates the French-influenced "spirit" and for a time they were synonymous. Now, after centuries of parallel usage, they've taken on subtle but distinct differences. Like the Eskimos with 10 words to describe snow, English has several words to describe similar things.
Because of it's inclusiveness, English is a very flexible language. People who claim that there are rules that must be followed don't have an understanding of the history of the English language (although for practical purposes, the change is glacial so yes, there are rules you need to follow).
Spelling changes faster than grammar and we can see some words change in our lifetimes. The word "lite" for example is now a semi-accepted spelling of "light". The original "light" was pronounced with a hard "G" which faded over the years, for various reasons (likewise with knight and night). In another 100 years, we probably won't see the spelling of "light" any more. "Knight" will probably never change because it is such an uncommon word. "Night" however has already seen a metamorphosis into "Nite" in children's books, advertisements and hyphenations (e.g. nite-lite for night-light).
If you read books from the early 20th century, you'll often find alternate spellings of words that for some reason didn't catch on. "Clew" and "Clue" for example, or even funnier (and a clew to what I enjoy reading) "Bubbies" and "Boobies."
You know, I didn't even read the original post. Is this on-topic?

XemnasXD wrote:regardless of how you personally feel about the languages this is what i've gathered from various english professors and foreign language professors. I didn't say English grammar was hard i just said most of the time its random and confusing, as if rules were made on the spot and words created without any real thought. Americans, like other ppls, tend to ignore these inconsistencies and just go with them once they know of them but because we're just going along with it no one stops and thinks about the proper rules that should be applied. Like who and Whom the latter of which, contrary to popular belief, is not old english but very much part of the current language, ppl just don't care. This attitude is applied to the entire country and thus rules become subject to people personal opinions which somehow find there way around the country and we get it jumbled up even more. Its not hard to get different rules for english from different english teachers.
plz note that this scenario may apply the world over but i don't know that i just know how it is here.
My bad. I misunderstood you.
But Belgian education gives quite a lot of attention to grammar for all the languages at high school. We're forced to study the inconsistencies.

I can type like this as well, but I choose not to because I can't be bothered to write properly.
Well, I type like that because I do a lot of my assignments on the computer. Therefore my spelling and punctuation must be perfect. When I used to type like... well... that! I accidentally once typed it onto my exam, and the teacher wasn't happy. It wasn't the whole thing, just a sentence, but it lowered my mark severely.

Oh, honey...
Because I always was doozing off at English Class (always bored, I just sat there playing cards, eating, listening music, talking, singing, rolling tabacco, tapping cigarettes and stuff like that, my teacher gave me something to do: Check the english tests. I had a lot of fun, especially seeing some hardcore gamers using "U" in stead of "You", and all kinda stuff like that.
i waz roffling the whole time, but the teacher didn't notice because I always did that...
Never did a damn thing for English, it just rolled in thanks to SRF, Musics, and of course the telly. But there's one thing I still can't write properly.
Of course... still don't know how to right it good >.<

Its probably because the english language is so complex and many times random and nonsensical, that the language is best and more commonly know through common social interaction and whats accepted socially. I even forget the rules on spacing at the end of sentences but knowing english it probably varies teacher to teacher, text book to text book.
English grammar is by the far easiest I know ... You should try to learn Croatian grammar with all the stuff ...

Rarely do I pay attention, School is a social environment, not learning.
I still managed to pass my English Essay with flying colours (3500 words - B+) It's not bad.
