PC problem!
Hello all. I have some weird problem with my PC and I wanna hear your suggestions or better if someone know how to fix it.
The thing is when I start any game ( Stalker, NBA, GTA, SRO) after 5 minutes in game PC just turn off, like somene pull out the plug.
But when I dont play games evrything is fine, I surf on it, use LimeWire, winamp and all good. I left it all day long turned on while downloading movies and all ok, but soon as I enter game it shuts down.
I tried changing Graphic card ( 9600 pro with friends 9550) and still same thing.
Im open to suggestions.
thx

Re: PC problem!
Did you installed the new graphic card to the same slot with the old one ??
If you did so try to change the slot if you have one more. If it does not solve the problem there maybe a problem with your main board.

I would look for heat issues or driver problems before i would say a motherboard is dead.

Yeah, as mentioned check for heat issues (gaming creates heat, so sign its an issue), or check that you have a powerful enough power supply.

Re: PC problem!
I dont have to slots for graphic card.
And yes I instaled latest drivers.
I have power suply Codegen 300W. Maybe its heating, Couple months ago my cooler from CPU fell off, maybe I need that paste that stands between cooler and CPU?
But wouldnt he overheat running all day, downloading and others?
And maybe its RAM, what do you think? I have 1 gb of ram, in 2 slots 512mb each maybe oneof them isnt working properly. I tried to start sro with 512mb ram to check but it didnt worked,it took 15 min just to load sro.

Re: PC problem!
Usually PC's wont generate enough heat to trigger a shutdown unless they're under heavy load, like a graphically intensive game. So yeah your CPU heatsink falling off might have something to do with it, check and make sure there's still some gel on it and make sure the heatsink is on properly.

Re: PC problem!
Damn u need a more powerful power supply. When you aren't gaming you really don't use your gfx card as much so it requires less power. So, when you get into the games your g card starts working to its capability it uses more power and with a card like that it prolly uses at least 300w which is all of your power supply. Which in turn limits the power to the other parts so if they don't have any power they don't run and then your comp shuts down because it isn't able to run with missing parts. Also, if you keep running it like that you may fry your power supply which could catch fire and then wreck the rest of your computer.

the 9800 pro specs have a warning saying it requires 300w minimum but the 9600 pro has no warning atal. The power supply should be fine.
It really sounds like heat problems. Especially if your heatsink fell off. you will probably need more thermal paste. Download speedfan and see how hot it gets when you start to play a game

Re: PC problem!
If your PC is straight up turning off, it's a power supply problem. Get a more powerful power supply. Lock thread plz.
Note: that's not to say you don't have heat problems, which clearly you do.

If it over heats, 99% of motherboards are programmed to beep before shutting down. Also, a good chunk of them will BSOD restart, not shut down completely.

Checking it isnt a heating problem is still priority number 1. Its a waste of time/money to out out buying new parts to find it wasnt the problem and its still overheating.

I was just diagnosing the problem he stated.

It doesn beep and it doesnt restart, its like you pull the plug out.
So you think its power supply. I will borow from friend some stronger power supply and try it then.
I will post results, i hope tomorow.
thx evryone for suggestions.

My motherboard beeps like a motherfucker when anything on it dosnt have enough power to run (except my ram, it just says "screw you" and kills the screen) so we cant really make assumptions to how yours would react although its good you have a powersupply available to help you troubleshoot without having to spend money until you are sure its the problem.

Re: PC problem!
Diagnosing heating is simple, check your BIOS or download a window utility that shows temperature.
The only time I had a power supply die, the only thing that set it apart was sometimes when I turned it on it would turn off during booting, and i'd have to try over and over. If it's your GFX card pushing the limit (which would make sense considering your PC turns off in games) troubleshooting it would be as simple as plugging your monitor into your integrated card and trying on that.

I like zero cost or low cost testing and agree with Reise about most likely cause.
GET HEATSINK PASTE. Thermal paste is cheap (cheap insurance). Don't use adhesive; you may want to change your cpu or heatsink one day (plus it doesn't transfer heat as well).
I use Artic Silver, but it's kinda' pricey for someone just doing one computer.
You could "gehtto cool" your comp also - take the side off and get a regular house fan blowing straight into it. Run your games and try to recreate the failure.

I bought a tube and applicator of cheap stuff for $12 - it came with a retarded small fan too (about 35 mm), with adhesive to stick it to the side of your case. But for someone who's never applied the stuff before, I would suggest he buys thermal pads - their like the paste but easier to apply.
