Possibly the best **CONSOLE** RPG ever...
So, I just finished Persona 3 FES, and I wish I could go back and play the game for the first time again (I am going through it again on "plus" mode, but it's not like the first time). If you play RPGs for story, this game wins hands down. If you like a good standard action-turnbased RPG (like the Final Fantasys), this game is for you. If you like HOURS UPON HOURS of amazing gameplay, this game is for you.
Still not entrigued? Let's try this; The game is about 3 school students who are fighting against "shadows" at night. They can summon powers called "Personas" to aid them in this fight (Think Xenogears, but demons instead of mechs). Now for the kicker: To summon these powers, they take a gun, and shoot themselves in the head. You read that right. Now, to satisfy your curiosity, go out and pick this game up for the PS2, and prepare to be blown away (edit: I just realized that was a pun lol).

I think you're thinking of the wrong kind of turnbased. I mean the kind like Final Fantasy 1-10, not tactics style.

FF 1-10 = Turned Based
Tactics = Turned Based + Some gay chess style.

Re: Possibly the best RPG ever...
Best RPG for me was the (patched
) Gothic Series.
Gothic (I) was way ahead of its time in 2001, and I spent night after night exploring and doing quests.
Gothic II was a wonderful follow-up to the original Gothic. Decent graphics for its time and ... i don't know... for me it was just fascinating. The NOTR (Night of the Raven) addon was a great addition, and as soon as I got my hands onto it, I put in 36 hours of game play in like 3-4 days and explored what was added to the world.
Now, Gothic III: although very buggy on its initial releases, after it was patched, I LOVED it... the bow/crossbow aim system differed from Gothic I and II, and was more challenging. Also, in Gothic III, the player is not forced to join any guild (as in gothic I and II). Instead, the game is based on a reputation system, and there are multiple possible endings (three, as opposed to the other serie's one).
All in all, the World of Gothic was always very fascinating for me, and that's what makes it my favorite RPG.

Re: Possibly the best **CONSOLE** RPG ever...
I googled a bit and noticed 'FES' is the expansion of the game, taking place after the original, shouldnt we play the original Persona 3 first? : \

It's an expansion that includes the original AND builds upon it... so the only one you need to play is the FES version.

Damn those who have Xbox.
J/K
I'm stuck with PS2 and I like GTA 4 the best as a RPG because of it's plot and gameplay. Über cutscenes too

Morrowind pretty much justified my Xbox's existence. Other than Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Wii that has to have been the last real quality time I've spent on a console RPG.
