Use the "System Configuration Utility" (MSCONFIG) to identify startup programs. MSCONFIG is available for all Win9x/Me/2K/XP/Vista users (Win95/2K user can use the respective versions from here).
You invoke it by clicking Start then Run. In the Open box, type msconfig.exe followed by enter. Once displayed, click on the "Startup" tab. You will see a list of items and the 2 columns that we're interested in are "Name" (ME) or "Startup Item" (XP/Vista) and "Command". For Win98 the columns aren't named but the one on the left is the equivalent of "Name" and the one on the right is the equivalent of "Command":
XP
Vista

Re: start up?
Ok well I appreciated this thread, but when I restarted it displayed a message and said to switch it to normal start-up mode.
But it enables the programs that I do not want on start-up. So should I just leave it on selective start-up? or is that not good for it?

Re: start up?
Isn't it possible to change the start up just by going to Control Panel? Under Control Panel should be an option that says Programs, with 2 subdivisions underneath it, "Uninstall a Program" and "Change startup programs". Click the "Change startup programs" and then just choose the ones you want.

For vista yes.
For XP no.
