External harddisk problem.

Post by cin »

Ok.

I just bought this 500gb external harddisk. On the box it says plug n play, just
like my other external, which i just plugged in, formatted, and used. Well this
one, i plugged it in, i hear the usb device sound, but then nothing. It doesn't
show the extra harddisk on my computer. It does, however, show the safely remove
device icon, and when i safely remove it, the storage device name is there to
click -.- any suggestions? Did i do something completely wrong?

I'd really like this harddisk to just fcking work. It's 12.15am now and i already
overslept once this week -.-

I'm going to type this in Dutch quick, sorry..:

Beetje laat nu, maar misschien moet je het station nog een letter toewijzen;

Plug in; boot pc, then boot external HD
If it doesn't show in "My computer"
Reboot pc(leave external HD on)
Does it show now?

Also, I read: "No problems with my other external HD".
-> Is your other HD on? Maybe they have the same letter => conflicting.

If none of these help; could u maybe post the model/type of the external HD?

And please check if the HD is formatted as NTFS, if not do so.
FAT32 is almost the same as NTFS; only slower when it comes to searching files AND it can NOT store 1 file bigger than 4 GB! (FAT32 - max file size = 4GB ; NTFS - max file size = "unlimited")

its fixed.

thanks for the tips, but i know that plug and play means plug it in, reboot
pc, let it install its drivers. there was a trick for it. i had to rightclick
"my computer" and then "administrate" or something, it's "beheren" in dutch.
there i had to format that disk, now it all works.
