I'm religious, I believe in Heaven, and a seperate afterlife here on Earth. I don't believe in Hell, why would the all loving God create a place like that?
Being religious I feel I have something to look forward too when I die, Athiests have nothing to look forward too.

The world we live in isn't technically God's world... it's Satan's, therefore this world is evil, and everyone is vulnerable to turning against God, the ones who stay strong however will be rewarded. <---- My belief.

Also, a question to the Athiests: for those of you who celebrate Christmas, who's birth are you celebrating?

I have tomorrow to look forward to.

Also, I celebrate Christmas because spending time with family and friends, for any excuse, is something worth celebrating.

There won't always be a tommorow, when your life ends.. or everyones life ends you will be left with nothing.

You can celebrate spending time with your family on any of the other 364 days of the year, but yet you choose to celebrate it on christmas day, the day recognised as Jesus's birthday, and yet you don't believe in Jesus.

No. Before I die, that split moment before your heart decompresses for the last time and you can feel your last breath, i'll be confident in knowing that I lived my life by the way I chose; being a good or bad person for genuine reasons, and content with what i've done. It's a myth that atheists are only there to trick christians into dropping their beliefs and leading them to burn in hell - I could care less how you live your life, whether or not you need a crutch is yours to choose. I am however quite glad that life is not eternal. It's what makes life special, and worth living. If it were eternal there would be no reason to life, no will, and no hope.

When i'm old, and i've loved, and seen, and i've done; i'll take comfort in knowing that it will one day be over. It might be hard to rationalize for someone who's been abused by religion, but eternity is indeed quite a long time. After a long day's work, it's nice to go to bed and sleep a long slumber, even if i'm not concious the entire time. I can only imagine death is the same, eternal bliss in complete rest.

As for spending time with family: It's quite hard to get together and live, christmas makes it much easier with everyone not having to work, go to school, or anything like that. It's an opportunity, just like how Christians have the opportunity to praise God every single moment of every single day - it's funny that with 7 days of the week, even some of the most devout choose to devote their lives to God only once during that period. Apparently, this is a cheap way into scoring a ticket into heaven, rather than suffer eternal damnation by our most merciful, kind, and gentle lord.

Either way, Christmas isn't the only day where I have an excuse to get together with my family, there's always Easter too.

I used to be extremely Catholic, but I fail to see how anyone with any general understanding of anthropology, biology, physics, and history can be confident in their faith. It's not something you could understand, being Christian and all, but I can understand where you're coming from - having lived the biggest part of my life as a devout Christian.

I have my personal beliefs on God and Christianity, but not strictly religious. I have "Laid-back" kind of sense where I don't always think about it or affects my life that much.

If you have lived a good life you shouldn't worry about having an afterlife in a place called heaven thats in a different dimension which your 'sole' floats up to after death.-err something like that.

Lol so true. I can't think of anyone that I personally know to really celebrate x-mas strictly for acknowledging the birth of Jesus. Christmas has become so commercial it's nearly lost its original meaning and purpose; I can't remember a year when I haven't been bombarded with near-threats as to what I'd "want" for x-mas; I guess my usual "I don't know" doesn't fly ^^. I use x-mas strictly for enjoying the company of loved ones, I could give a damn less if I got anything or not.

"You could have everything in the world and yet have lack of meaning to life if there's no one there to love and cherish."

Also a big +1 to Dom's post; Life's too short. I'd expect everyone to have enough things to worry about in life to even worry about an eternal afterlife in bliss or damnation.

I believe out of most religious beliefs, reincarnation and karma makes the most sense to me, but that's just me ^,^.

/rant: the thing that bothers me the most is the extremely religious people who act as though they know 1000% what is right and wrong about religion (like Grandpappy said in an earlier post, they speak as if they know God, and as if they can speak to God); and the crazy religious people who try to force beliefs on you...a big <3 out to 'em

Ok, my "position" on "religion" isn't the norm.
Because it includes "me first" kinda thing.
So when I read things in the NYTimes like this: NT Times Religion
(It's about a 16 year old student with enuf courage
to defend a Muslim girl against a Xian teacher in the wrong)
It kinda makes me crazy. Doesn't take much these days.

My hero said it best: "Wash the inside of the cup FIRST."
I'll tell you more when I'm perfect... but don't look for the movie version soon.

In the meantime it's me that needs the washing, ya know?
In other words, if there was a convicted mass-murderer
    who got a Presidential pardon...
but he was still guilty (because a pardon demands guilt, doesn't it?)...
how much gall would he have to have to go preaching to everybody
      (those who never committed murder)
      to stop?

It makes me crazy, but then I already said that, didn't I?

Part of me likes the ideas presented by the Atheists better.
Religion and Politics don't mix, but if they must, it should be a homogeneous mix.

My ancestors died for these principles,
I'm not about to stand down from that spilt blood.
Well, not until He comes again, but then, that's a different topic.

~Grandpa
[EDIT]
@RiceFarmer
    Question(s)
  • - Should women be allowed to teach?
  • - Are blood transfusions okay when needed to save life?
  • - Should good men protest abortion in all cases?
  • - Can Jesus also be called "Michael the Archangel"?)

↑ ↑ <~~ no need to answer, just guessing at the 'flavor' of your faith.

So the strong ones will be rewarded, and what happens to the heathens?
You believe there is no hell, so I'm gonna chill next to you in heaven or is there a sinner-heaven?

Also, how do you know that you believe in the right god? And in the right way?

If an all loving god didn't create a hell, Then why would he fill this world with evil and let Satan control us.
IF THERE WAS AN ALL LOVING AND ALL POWERFUL GOD THIS WORLD WE LIVE ON WOULD NOT BE FULL OF DEATH AND HATRED, HE WOULD CREATE EVERYONE = AND MAKE IT SO THESE HUMANS THAT HE CREATED HAVE NO DOUBT IN HIM.
WHY WOULD AN ALL LOVING GOD WHO CREATED US MAKE PEOPLE LIKE ATHEIST TO DOUBT HIS RELIGION, WHY WOULD HE MAKE SOMEONE LIKE HITLER WHO KILLED MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.

IF THERE WAS SUCH AN AMAZING BEING WITH SUCH AMAZING POWERS THIS WORLD WOULDN'T BE A SHIT HOLE.

BUT- MAYBE THIS WORLD IS A SHIT HOLE BECAUSE AFTER THIS DEPRESSING LIFE WE GET TO GO TO HEAVEN11!1!1

-According to your theory, A heaven without hell i think it would be rather interesting to see a person like hitler with his nic little stash walking around with angels!?!1/1

I must have missed something.

I wonder if anybody else did as _Scarlett_ requested?
I'm listening (and crying) now.
Where is understanding? Where?

Even if you don't believe, it's ok. He hears your heart.
I do believe and Trust (even though I don't expect you to, it's ok)
God will clean His house FIRST.
It's something that Xians should start crying out for, asking for...
That the LORD judge them (us) NOW
The thought scares me, but the LORD chastises those whom He loves.

I am so sorry to all for what 'we' have done, please forgive me.
[EDIT: To Christians, I am not denouncing the move of God, only those who are deceived and putting out their shingle as "Prophets" but are false prophets indeed.]
me <~~~ still watching the vids...

(to my friend, Gimm - He probably believes that eternal life isn't for everybody, oc it isn't but that's the answer. I'd defend his statements to a degree) ~Gpa

And you have every right to be...

(more later) Did you notice from my AVI that Christ is absent from His cross?
It is what is happening to soooo many people for whom He died.
I'm a preacher, but my mouth is closed...

What can be done?
    Me? Okay, why not...
    I've asked two (2) things
  • That my life be extended
  • That these 'days' are shortened.

So it is for me to wait.
Sorry to bring this up in your topic
But there is one religion that nobody is gonna 'fess up to
The religion of the Anti-Christs:
Image
(Image SS from "Jesus Camp" 3/9 frame 23)

Caution: It's not the Xians alone... it's more pervasive than that.
Pls see 'FITNA' in my other post in a thread called, "THAT'S WHACK"
It's not just 'religion' either. Check out Bloggish found here ~~> "We are all bigots inside" and spoiler in the 'That's Whack' post.
SciAm.com > Scientific American Mind > Mind & Brain > The Senses Image

Key Concepts

    Subliminal Stereotyping

  • All of us hold unconscious clichéd beliefs about social groups: black and white, female and male, elderly and young, gay and straight, fat and thin.
  • Such implicit bias is far more prevalent than the more overt, or explicit, prejudice that we associate with, for instance, the Ku Klux Klan or the Nazis.
  • Certain social scenarios can automatically activate implicit stereotypes and attitudes, which then can affect our perceptions, judgments and behavior, including the choice of whom to befriend, whom to hire and, in the case of doctors, what treatment to deliver.
  • Recent research suggests we can reshape our implicit attitudes and beliefs—or at least curb their effects on our behavior.

"There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life,” Jesse Jackson once told an audience, “than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery—then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.”

Good to see this topic is somewhat still going and hasn't come to be a flamefest (religion is always a touchy subject, but you guys managed to maintain your composure *thumbs up*). Religion is a fascinating subject, whether if you believe in it or not. Also, I'd like to thank those who took time to watch the Jesus Camp movie. Perfect example of just how far being "religious" can go (not stereotyping that ALL religious groups go to that extreme, tis only an example of one). Keep up the posts, they're fairly interesting.
