My parents gave me official permission and support to start drinking when I turned 16, and they always offered to buy me my alcohol until I turned legal. It's nice to be able to drink when hanging out with friends, partying and stuff; but the act of "drinking" or "getting smashed" loses its novelty rather quick. Centering your night around getting drunk is a wasted night, alcohol is just something you do while enjoying the company of your friends, not the other way around.
