Chemistry Help!!!

Post by CrimsonNuker »

I have this big assed test JUST on balancing chemical equations, and i need HALP!

We got this revview with a bunch of balancing questions and im looking at the bigger ones with like 5-6 elements with a few polyatomic ions in it thinking "....wtf"

My friend and I were attempting to do the bigger questions since they were harder and we came across a friggan equation like this:

__(NH4)3PO4 + __Pb(NO3)4 -> __Pb3(PO4)4 + __NH4NO3

We spent nearly the whole class trying to answer that question (We were using the table chart way because thats the only way we've learnt so far)

Can anybody give me tips or tricks to do balancing equations faster?
:!: Done

I have a chemistry unit test tomorrow and im cramming atm.

Before i ask this question..I WAS NEVER GOOD AT SCIENCE.

Kay..so im doing review questions and theres this question that says

Element Q is a metal with 2 valence electons, and element X is a non metal with 5 valence electrons. They combine to form an ionic compound. What is its formula?

The answer i came up with is

Element Q= Nitrogen (Cation)
Element X= Beryllium (Anion)

But this makes no sense, i've never heard of a compound made of nitrogen+beryllium...HALP. :?:

__(NH4)3PO4 + __Pb(NO3)4 -> __Pb3(PO4)4 + __NH4NO3

From what i learned in chemistry class, when balancing equations:
    Balance the metals first (in this case, Pb)
    Next, balance polyatomic ions (NH4,PO4,NO3) make any adjustments to metals if necessary
    Then balance non-metals (none in this case), make adjustments
    And finally, hydrogen and oxygen (also none), make adjustments

So, following these rules, the first step looks like this:
__(NH4)3PO4 + 3Pb(NO3)4 -> __Pb3(PO4)4 + __NH4NO3

Then you go for the polyatomic ions

__(NH4)3PO4 + 3Pb(NO3)4 -> __Pb3(PO4)4 + 12NH4NO3

4(NH4)3PO4 + 3Pb(NO3)4 -> __Pb3(PO4)4 + 12NH4NO3

and finally, fill in the last blank with a one, since the equation is balanced

4(NH4)3PO4 + 3Pb(NO3)4 -> 1Pb3(PO4)4 + 12NH4NO3

guess what this is

[1R-(exo,exo)]-3-(Benzoyloxy)-8-methyl-8-azabicyclo [3.2.1] Octane-2-Carboxylic Acid Methylesters 3-beta-hydroxy-1-alpha-H, 5-alpha-H tropane-2-beta-carboxylic-acid methyl ester benzoate

or

[1R-(exo,exo)] -3-(benzoyloxy)-8-methyl-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester

and this is real, pretty sure everyone know what it is on this forum or even used it...

Chaos could you give me an example where you would have to make adjustments?

The example I'm giving you isn't the best one. I'll go dig up my notes, and if I happen to find a better one, I'll post it then.

Consider CaCl2 + AgNO3 --> AgCl + Ca(NO3)2
first balance the metals Ca and Ag:
1CaCl2 + AgNO3 --> 1AgCl + 1Ca(NO3)2

Next, we move onto polyatomic ion NO3:
1CaCl2 + 2AgNO3 --> 1AgCl + 1Ca(NO3)2

Since we've added a two in front of AgNO3, we have to go back and change the balancing of Ag:
1CaCl2 + 2AgNO3 --> 2AgCl + 1Ca(NO3)2

the non-metal, Cl, is already balanced.
there are no hydrogen or oxygen.

so therefore, 1CaCl2 + 2AgNO3 --> 2AgCl + 1Ca(NO3)2

In the second step, where we balance out the polyatomic ion NO3, we made an adjustment to Ag, which was step one. So, we had to go back and readjust Ag.

Oxidation/reduction balancing is the most difficult thing to do if you need to balance.
(It's still easy as hell)

Your solution was a simple one.

You could even try doing it like this.

3x + y + z + 4t = 3z + 4y + x + t

Now it's math instead of chem.
Just find the solution for this equation with the lowest possible whole number (it should have a name, but I forgot), because there are infinity solutions.

its a large part of chemistry...

Basically the 3 big sciences go like this

Physics->Chemistry->Biology

Physics doesn't incorporate Biology and is the bases of the laws needs for Chemistry.
Chemistry requires knowledge of physics and is the basis of laws for Biology.
Biology doesn't need physics but requires knowledge of Chemistry.
