iPad vs. Toshiba Laptop <Opinions>

Post by Majorharper »

Alright so, I go to college now, and I bring my 2 year old laptop: Image
To school every single day.

Its 2 years old and im wondering if its worth keeping... (I would sell it to my mom for about 300$)

It doesnt have a video card, its powerful but not that much on battery saver... (sadly)

I would buy an iPad to replace it, since with the new OS I could run more than 1 app at the same time... Which is the first reason why I didn't get the iPad...

Its friggen light as hell, thin as fk, and I can type all my docs. on it no problem. (I would get the 32Gb)

you think i could connect it to my wireles printer? Is it internet (wireless) user friendly? is the word docs compatible/easy to transfer to a pc?

So is the trade worth it? any disappointed / thrived iPad users here?

Pros and cons?

PLEASE NO TROLL :| im serious about this I dont wana waste money...

Thanks guys :D

I say wait for the new products similar to the iPad. Cheaper, more compatible, etc.

My dad has one I haven't used it much so couldn't tell you, but I would suggest spending $600 on a refurbished/used laptop with warranty instead it will get you further.

If your schoolwork doesn't require much more than a word processor and wireless printing then it won't be a problem for the iPad. You could use the DropBox app (free) for the iPad to auto-sync documents from the iPad to a PC/Mac and save time with transfers (it syncs copies of files on your iPad, DropBox servers, and your desktop). As far as printing goes, there's plenty of apps that allow you to connect to network and wireless printers (there are also a few official apps from the printer manufacturers themselves). If you like the iPad and don't really need powerful computer components, then by all means buy it. If you require something with a bit more versatility, then I'd recommend getting a good netbook and slapping a linux distro on it. They're small, light, and relatively inexpensive.

Are you serious?

You don't want to waste money, then why the hell would you consider something like the iPad which has minimal uses compared to a laptop, and minimal specs as well?

You can't replace a laptop with an ipad, no matter how old it is, but with a 2 year old laptop you shouldn't have any problem.

Laptops > iPads

I am sure you are not really trying to save money considering you would get the 32 gigabyte Apple Women pad.

Either stick with your laptop or get a new laptop.

Your laptop is good enough for school. If you want a laptop that's able to run games at minimal specs then go buy <insert information from someone else since I have no idea about laptops>.

Considering that you're selling your old laptop to your mom for $300 I assume it was like $800? It should be good enough for a couple more years until it gets replaced and those specs will be like $200.

My laptop was 950$ in 2008...

Mirosuke wrote:Stick to your Toshiba. I think you are bringing excuses with your poor Toshiba to get an iPad. :/

Not really, my laptop is heavy, especially that I have to carry around this huge power supply because it wasnt from canada, but from dubai, my adapter is HUGE, takes up a lot of space in my bag... Thats the main reason why I wana get an iPad, its small compact, and battery lasts ages

***Just to clarify***

I meant by wasting my money, is that: I'm ready to make an investment to buy the iPad thats no problem, I have money for it sure, but the thing is as you all said, its dam expensive, but it looks nifty, and its just that after a couple months I don't want to be looking at it saying fu.cking hell...
I don't consider it a ''waste'' of money, if I like the product :D

Master_Of_Puppets it seems like your mind was already made up, so why even ask, why even ask for logical and rational opinions that your laptop is already a lot better than a fad. If you want to look excentric around your buddies than get an iPad, if you want an actual functioning peice of hardware then you already know the choice.

For college work, i don't get why anyone would want to buy an ipad unless its only for fun.

I think the ipad costs like 500$ for which you could buy a pretty good new laptop if you don't want to use your old one.

Take that back you.. you fAndroid! :x

Yeah DropBox is awesome. I use CloudApp more though because it's I don't need syncing as much as file hosting, so that's been a huge timesaver.

"Better" is subjective and doesn't apply to the needs and requirements of other users, not to mention their own preferences. To completely disregard that and rely on non-objective reasoning is itself illogical and irrational.

Anyway, this is getting silly, moving on!

The official Apple suite for the iPad (iWork for iPad, derp) is really good for getting those things done. iWork is composed of a word processor (Pages), presentation creator (Keynote), and spreadsheet maker (Numbers). There's a bunch of videos of application features on the Apple site if you want more info.

http://www.apple.com/ipad/guided-tours/

Now here's the kicker, and most likely the deal breaker. While the 3 apps can easily import many file types, the official exporting tool is complete crap. 'Keynote' and 'Numbers' do not support exporting documents to Office suite formats, which might be an issue. They support exporting as PDF files or sending files via email, and even using an online service for viewing the files. There might be a third-party solution to that, and I haven't really looked into it, but the iWork suite is still just a 1.0 release so maybe an official solution would be available in later updates. 'Pages' does support exporting to .doc so that's not an issue.

Your other solution as I said is to buy a good netbook. They're about the price of an iPad or less and they're neat little devices for on-the-go computing. They usually come pre-installed with a slimmed down version of Win7 (or the full OS on more powerful ones) although I prefer the Linux-based JoliCloud myself.

Hope that helps.

- Sent from my iPad :sohappy: (but not really)

Netbooks are a lot cheaper, an ipad would cost like $600? While you can find a ton of netbooks in the $200-400 range.

Yeah this.
Get a decent netbook laptop, like the small ones, or get another laptop from like cyberpower or ibuypower that has great specs, and a pretty low price. Those brand names are usually way overpriced.

just get cheap 100-200$ laptop if you only want it for school work. these 100-200$ laptop are very small and light weight(about 3/4 the size of the laptop u already own). althogh the specs are not great it is more than enough to do school work. I personally don't think there is a good use for the ipad since there are notebooks around already, and you can also type faster on a notebook keyboard than ipad keys. If you want to own a apple product then check out thier mp3 players(a.k.a ipods).

Pretty much you will looking for anyone post that support the iPad (which are few) so, at the end, it's up to you. it's your money.

As I mentioned, im not an apple fan at all, so stop bashing me for that, I have previously owned an iPod U2 edition, sold it to my dad cuz i didnt like it so yeah, im lookin into the iPad because of lightweight and battery life...

Lag? Lag how? A laptop shouldn't "lag" doing the exact same things an iPad would do.

Regardless of that, there ARE laptops that are lightweight, have less "lag" than the iPad, have long battery life AND cost around the same price or less. You're being ignorant and falling for Apples advertising. But hey that's your choice, there have been many posts here telling you what's right.

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6834220651

All 3 less than 3 pounds. A kilogram is about 2.2 pounds. Each has 250gb HDD and a processor that is technically better than the A4 processor.

That took TWO minutes of searching. :palm:

So this is how the thread is going

You ask for advice on whether you should keep your laptop or buy a ipad

most people tell you keep your laptop since its cheaper than the ipad, its for college, and iPads are only for entertainment for the like the first few weeks and then they get old.

you say your toshiba is lame etc

Others say you can get a new laptop for much cheaper than an ipad

you say ipad is the shitz and looks nifty.

If you already made up your mind on getting an iPad, then why create a thread about it?

Your laptop shouldn't be lagging in any way. You probably have installed too much garbage. Reformat it, get off Vista, and it'll be fine for everything. My $200 laptop runs without any 'lag'. Only lag I get is starting up programs that need a bit more resource than the usual stuff.

As mentioned you have your mindset on getting the iPad regardless of what we tell you. I guess I'm done here.

It has upto 7hours battery life, which is a bit shorter then you want but I don't think you will find many at 10hours.
