Need a new processor (help)
So ive been getting new games lately and it seems like my current processor (AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processer 3200+) is a bit to weak. Now im not an expert when it comes to hardware so thats why im asking for your help.
Id like a pretty good processer but at a reasonable price.
I have no idea what slot I have and so on so tell me what to find out and ill get back to you with the information.
I would like a dual-core (think assassins creed doesnt support single cores) but it doesnt have to be duo just as long as its a good one.
Come on computer experts, help!

Re: Need a new processor (help)
First of all every game supports single cores, just some games are running better on 2 cores...
Anyways as far as i know the core2duo 6750 @ 2.66ghz is a best price performance proccessor, which is as well very OC friendly..
not really good with AMD proccessors, but ill look for the info, i think u have an AGP motherboard, which wont let u use core2duo :p
so basically ull need to replace half computer...
than again this thread probably going to be moved to technical help

Thaught that place was for SRO related stuff only, well, my bad.
But yeah, I wouldnt want to replace my mother board just yet. Guess ill be getting a single core.So any idea on a good AMD single core?

AMD Athlon™ FX 77
i think this one is pretty much the best outta all single of AMD, tho again it worth 300$
spending such money on a single core is pretty useless and expensive...

Re: Need a new processor (help)
Just buy a new computer, seriously the proccesor wont improve the performance much, those few hunder MHz wont do much work, besides single cores work on LOW KB/MB cache size...
the core i told u about has only 1mb l2 cache, while e6750 has 4mb , works much faster, and possible to overclock to the max of 3.6ghz with additional cooling added :p pretty beast.
Not to mention its as well 250-300$
and AMD Athlon™ FX 77 on official site 350-400$
......goes to bed gn :p

No matter what kind of payment you use, it's still a thousand bucks for a computer piece that isn't even that needed. Current games can do fine with 2 cores, they don't take advantage of the extra 2 cores (not that noticeable, at least). Too expensive for a little difference with 2 core systems.

Re: Need a new processor (help)
No QUAD core is no way better than a fast 2 core proccessor, simply because quad wasnt meant for games and yet there is still no games actually running on the 4 cores ...
If you want a good gaming computer dual would be a best idea, since the cores are faster than quad...
Yet quad would win dual in any programm that requiers much thinking , for example graphic editors, photoshop, 3dmax , even C++ which needs some power to compile things...
but again there is still problem with OS which will actually work with the quad system, 64bit os are still in developing, they are out but u dont want to know how many problems ull have with them :p , and 32bit is not even uses half of the quad improvements since its build to think on 1 core, and hardly 2...
Thats why some people install 2 Operating systems on their comps, a good old 32bit , and 64 ..
im still stuck with my 32bit XP sp2
Well i just guessed since ur CPU is an old 1core, which probably means u r on AGP board..
To check just tell us ur mother board name, or just find the motherboard manual if u still didnt throw it away

Google for cpuz and download/run it, it'll give you all the details you'll need ^^

If my current socket is 939 would I still be able to get another one or do I have to get another processor with the 939 socket. Having trouble finding a good 939.

Re: Need a new processor (help)
if you want to play new games you're gonna have to update your mobo/graphics card and maybe memory (but memory is like $20 bucks for 2gig).
An e6600 is very reasonably priced and if you overclock it you get a lot of bang for the buck.
Another option is an E8400 which is more expensive and also better. Though you can overclock and E6600 to perform as an E8400 and the E8400 isn't as easily overclocked as the E6600.

Already have a new grafics card, just never baught a processer before so im not an expert in that area.
EDIT: Reason why I want a new processor is that I think its the processor that keeps me from playing Assassins creed and some other games, if Im having trouble playing games now, god knows what games ill miss out on in a few months.
But im not sure its the processor. In AC it does infact say that I do not meet the minimum requirement but ive seen people play the game with the one im using. Game just crashes (sometimes my cpu just revoots)after a few seconds(sometimes a minute but not that often) after starting the first map.

Actually i had a dual core... A very good one too. And my quad core (i have the Q6600 quad) can handle games 10x better.

mind calling the dual core name as well, no wonder quad will work better if u had dual core with 1.5ghz...
besides DUAL CORE is a slow and actually the first version of 2 cores on chip, core2duo is a advanced and much faster...

Re: Need a new processor (help)
might be, since this dual uses only 3mb cache and 2.5ghz
quad6600 has a base of 2.4ghz and a 4mbx2 mb cache..
yet e6750 is a cheap proccessor it actually outperforms quad in almost every game that is out now... even few programs are actually working better the core2duo, both q6600 and e6750 are capable of about +25% overclocking.. while quad goes up to 3.2ghz and caps there, dual caps at 3.6ghz ..
Well the choise is yours tho im still not sure how exactly the quad works 10x faster than ur previous CPU, in any benchmark the e6750 wins the quad..
But yes still if you want to build a computer for future, u should already be aiming for quad, or just pass abit and buy new 8 cores, the new programs/games are being developed to suit the new quad systems so , pretty much any game in next year will be quad dependant to boost ur FPS as much as possible :p

Re: Need a new processor (help)
Download CPU-Z and check what socket and motherboard you have.
http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_145.zip
If your PC reboots, maybe power supply is too weak? What graphics card did you buy?

Socket 939 CPUs are not available as new. You have to buy a used one.
PS. i think your processor is not the problem, something else is fked up.

Re: Need a new processor (help)
Btw Assasin creed has a problem in it(if u did download it and not bought)
Some files are not finished and usually cause the restart , people say the more MEMORY you have the lesser your crashes, usually on my new computer ive been ending playing about 1 hour before every crash,
now there is a fix, so u might want to overwrite few files...
this is in case your comp restarts only on AC :p
