Large Art competition!

Post by Snudge »

Well, I think to practice your photoshop 'skills' to the max, you should make more then 'just' signatures. So I thought we could have a Large Art competition! But first I think we need to set up some rules.
What do you guys think the rules of the competition should be?

What should the min. or max. size of the canvas?

What time-limit should the artists have for a piece?

What should be the subject of the first round? :P

If you got more that should be discussed; Please, do post!

yeah and the space bar for your hand tool, never have to zoom out.

but anyway, I think this should be a monthly thing, not a weekly thing

800x600 >> 350x100.

it takes a long time to do a good piece at 800x600 when you're holding down clients/school :D

either way whatever is decided, I would compete when I could. I also think they shouldn't have categories for this. If somebodies putting that much time in it should be something they personally want to do.

Making someone able to pick his own subject makes it harder to vote. Voteing will go more by personal tastes then objectivity due to several styles that will be used. :)

Id rather deal with biased votes than have a large piece of work I care nothing for.

I think every 2 weeks is fine, but we do need a theme. If you don't like the theme don't participate.

I see why you believe a theme is needed, but did you also know that freestyle IS considered a theme?

Also, with the scale of these projects, you are going to have less participation than sigwars, and if you cut that participation down even more with themes you may not be including enough people, or the people who do participate arent going to be giving it there all. An LP should be something YOU want to do, they require a larger investment in time, etc. If every theme isnt something everyone wants to do, participation is going to take a serious hit.

Themes could be incorporated, but they would have to be very loose themes, or if y'all cant live without them, why not make every other competition themed, and every other comp freestyle? Just some thoughts.

Less frequent means better pictures and more 'hype'. I also agree with Rizla on the theme topic, if there are strict themes and someone misses a deadline, however if this person still wants to enter said work but the theme restricts it, it would be very unfair as 800x600 takes much more time than 300x150.

I was thinking more in the way of very broad theme's like outer space, planets. Stars.. Lakes, oceans.. Etc..

When I was more into the graphics community, they never had "sig wars". It was always art competitions: one per week, you get 3 stock photos and must use on, on any standard wallpaper size (800x600, 1280x1024, 1600x1200, etc)

save your submission for now aazumak, nothing has been officially established yet.

we need to hold an informal "meeting" where a post will be made that allows interested parties to voice their opinion about which issues are most important to them. If conflicting points of view are presented, a voting post will be made covering all issues in debate, and from there an official protocol and schedule will be formed.

that would be my proposal.

Ok, I've read through the comments and liked some of the stuff I saw.

Deadlines: I think everone agreed by now that 2-weekly is going to be OK. If you don't think so, please do say.

Size: 800x600 seems to have the most support. Hoewever, I do support the idea of all-round wallpaper-sizes[800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 etc. For me, stuff that is i.e. 1024x500 fits as well. For that could be used as a wallpaper. This is debatable though].

Themes: Now this is a gnarly subject. I think we'll have a vote on this one, or just a tryout. We'll either go with a freestyle-competition, as Rizla proposed, or with a set render, as Dom propsed, and have people use that render.

Ok, this is what I came up with for now! If you don't like some of the stuff I put up, once again, do say so!

i think that sizes will always be a prob, so we should have teh links for them on the page

second, the 1st one should be freestyle to work us into and then we can think of nice broader themes after that.
