Post by penfold1992 »

can you guys recommend a gaming router? im looking for a new router which has great accessibility, wireless range and of course data transfer.

im planning on gaming wired through the router but wireless is always good for other things like laptops and such...

Unless you only play on a laptop I would never recommend wireless. Gaming router and not gaming router, wireless is shit.

I bought a new router last year myself, got a Netgear n600, it's never given me any problems at all so far and wireless speeds in my house are a lot better (there's basically 0 drop off in speed from my laptop on the 5Ghz connection, ofc ping will still be slower than wired)

i game on a pc which is wirelessly connected via power line adapter... so its wired connection ish?

but anyway... the main reason is because the wireless router i have now is shit, the configuration is shit and when i ping it at 192.168.0.1 to get to my router config page it times out half the time (and yes this even happens when you plug just cable in)

most people have wireless routers now a days even if they connect it via cable to their gaming pc's

Wireless connections of any sort while gaming just increases the potential for problems....

Don't believe their bullshit lol

Asus, Linksys, and Netgear make great n150 and n300 routers. Your budget should be $70+ and should look at ratings for 4+ stars. Also you should see if the router is compatible with DD-WRT or Tomato(preferably DD-WRT.) My last router was a netgear wnr2000v2 compatible with DD-WRT and it works like a charm! The wireless adapter I use is a netgear wna1100 and it has good range and speeds (theor. 150mbps.) Hopefully you consider walls too, such as cinderblocks, brick, lead.

gaige the walls make no difference when using powerline adapters its really for controlling ports as well as using the firewall etc as well as being able to give me good speed for my laptops and such when im streaming or whatever... the stability is important, not for gaming but just general use!

it seems like you are very knowledged with routers as current ive seen some n600's including the one posted above that seem ok.

as for dd-wrt ive looked into it before and it seemed a bit complex, how do u feel about it? (as a user urself?)

I though it was going to be wireless, mah bad, but DD-WRT is simple to use with some advanced sections. I haven't done much research on recent powerline adapters but people who live close by can pick up the signal, and the old ones at least were not encrypted, so they could easily see what you were doing. I don't know if the new ones are encrypted though.

nono it is a wireless router but with a cable plugged in just like you would plug in with a Ethernet cable.

then that ethernet cable goes into a power socket which allows the signal to transfer via the power lines of your house. the signal is then picked up the other end with another power line adapter then it goes into the pc via ethernet.

the router is still there so we can use wireless for laptops and other pcs that arent for gaming though.

Yes I have a router (wireless)....but I always connect to it via an Ethernet cable when gaming...Always...The connection to your router via an Ethernet cable will always be at Gigabit speeds (Most NIC cards today have Gigabit ratings as standard).... Check out the video below..... It might help you a bit. Getting a better router may not be your issue..Just get a faster power-line adapter than the one shown in this video if you can't or don't want to use an Ethernet cable..

Code: Select all

yea it isnt my house i cant route a cable all the way from downstairs to upstairs and the width and length of the house (my room is the opposite side of the house to the wireless router... so im using power line adapter as the next best thing)

so yea... still looking for a router as i already have pretty good power line adapters but the router is still difficult to manage... with the issue of not being able to get to the config page half the time, i really need a new one -.-

Just choose one!!

Several companies now sell home routers specifically marketed toward gamers. D-Link has their DGL series routers
Netgear markets its WNHDE111 as a great gaming router, and Linksys calls its WRT330N a Gaming Router.

In first person shooters it makes a difference xD it's also more consistent than wireless.
Also, i get much better speeds with my current router ^^ which is always nice when downloading stuff.

What's the point in getting a router that have speeds up to 500mb/s or w.e when your internet's max speed is like 34, unless you have a server?

It's the possibility of experiencing that "unwanted" difference that is the problem. It's slightly more likely to happen with a wireless connection than with a wired one...Signal integrity just isn't the same with the two options...

Also, my ping on my pc is generally lower than on my laptop as well, not sure if that's cos of my laptops reception or if it's like that with every wireless connection ^^
