Computer Nerds Click Here :)

Post by Puma60 »

I'm looking to send my PC in for an upgrade, basically I need it to run faster with big applications. It's 8 years old, with 2GB RAM (already upgraded from 1GB RAM 2 years ago), but I think that's the max amount of RAM it can hold. So yeah, any suggestions on how it can be upgraded?

Also don't ask me to buy a new PC because it's not mine, and lets just say, my dads close with his money.

Thanks for any help :)

The real problem with your computer is that you cannot upgrade it by going into a pc shop. I'm not quite sure if you can find there anything that would 'fit' into your computer. If you want to upgrade your cpu then I guess you will have to buy a new motherboard aswell. Same goes to a graphic card. I might be wrong but I meet with this situation very often. So yeah you can buy 2 more GB ram and a new winchester maybe but that won't speed up your computer.

Just try to find a shop that sells used PC stuff. You might be able to find there some good motherboard, cpu and maybe a cheap graphic card aswell. As it was said your PC is kinda old so makes things more complicated.

Good luck!

Puma there is nothing much you can do, unless you go look for parts on ebay, as heroo said its prehistoric, i doubt you will be able to find any parts for your computer out on the market, they probably wont be compatible with your computer and/or fry certain parts, due to high demand of power, whereas your pc isn't made to have such high demands... best you can do is get ram, and you said you've got the max..

I used to have a 5 year old pc before this one, which i got a year ago.. I tried to upgrade my 5 year old pc, since it had 512mb ram, and it took me forever to find a shop that still sold the type of ram i needed, if im not mistaken, it wasn't even DDR yet...

Windows XP noop :P

What everyone else said. More RAM won't help you and anything else needs multiple new parts which makes it much easier to buy a new computer entirely..

You're honestly better off buying and building a new computer. It'd be cheaper if you do it rather than sending it in to some random PC shop and better.

build a new computer with the focus being a solid state hard drive. They are expensive, yet fast and honestly they are the future or hds.

not helpful what so ever they may well be the future but right now you could go 5 years without one think ahead, think practicle and most of all offer advice for someone who most likly will have a lot budget and a ssd will easily cover $500 for a half decent size

Also don't ask me to buy a new PC because it's not mine, and lets just say, my dads close with his money.

It isn't yours but you can freely upgrade it? If your situation is that you can't do anything but upgrade old computers, you need to sit down with your dad and tell him that it doesn't fly by saving money on technology. Money is better saved elsewhere. And I don't understand why your dad is going to let you spend a good deal of money on upgrade parts when you can't buy a new computer?

Like other people probably mentioned, upgrading an 8 year old computer is going to be harder and more expensive than getting a new computer. And technology is developing so fast your going to have to get a new computer anyways.

Talk to your dad and persuade him to buy a new comp, he's out of touch with the pace of technology. Upgrading old computers only lets you go so far. A computer thats 4 or 5 years old fine, but 8 years you need to replace it.

Well if it isn't a laptop then, buy a new motherboard that fits your casing and/or buy a processor that is compatible with the motherboard.
