from this random source here: http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Int ... oading.asp

i gathered that in the U.S., it is illegal to download the mp3, but it's not illegal if you bought the CD and burned the mp3 files for your own use.

for canada, it's much more lax, you can download the mp3 from p2p site is legal, but uploading it isn't, lol.

the article stated a 20% loss in sales since 1999. (article written 2004)

of course, if you count in the unique cases where ppl do get caught and are billed with a hefty $250k fine, then you can expect some spikes in that graph.

However, what everyone seems to forget, is that this loss is basically more then countered by the increased revenue from advertising, merchandising, concerts etc. Accessibillity to these things has greatly increased, due to internet growing and growing.

I refuse to acknowledge a loss in sales. They've only made more profit since 1999. Basically i see it as pure lazyness. They're too lazy to figure out new ways of making money. Like online concert streaming for instance, or on cable. It's easy as ****. yet they continue to try take our privilidge of downloading away.

have they increased though?

well, lets see. isn't itunes selling songs for 99c? lets take a look at the average CD is probably $19.99 and will include lets say 10 songs. that's about $2 a song. if there is increase revenue from other sources, then they will still have lost profit from people downloading instead of buying.

Yes, they lose profit in one area, but gain in another.

You don't actually think they like cutting on their budget do you? Believe me, they wont have to cut.

We had this law in Finland couple years ago. Now it's illegal to download at all.
