You can keep your current gears you are wearing on, assuming you didn't drop it while de-leveling. But the defense stats from the gears won't count toward your total status but you can still wear them and other people will still see you with 'em.
Similarly, you can be a lvl 1 character while wearing a thief suit. Just get to lvl 20, put on the suit, then delevel to 1. You won't be able to summon a transport or rob anyone, and you can't attack any traders or hunters, but they can attack you!
What's the points of doing that?
Well there's really no point. I'm just saying just because you delevel doesn't mean you lose all of the abilities you had as a higher level, that's all.

Problem is you dont lose exp at lvl5 and below >_>
