Im going to the US this summer, and it'll be interesting on how the Americans will react to my giving no fees at all. Its such a silly idea, tipping.

Except the wage for servers in the US is $2.60/h. I think it's generally a good idea to adapt to the customs of the nation you're in or else you could come off as a tremendous asshole. When I was working as a sous chef at a naples style pizzeria we would always have italians come in and never tip because of that we made an off the book rule of mandatory 18% gratuity for all groups of italians (6 or more). Ofcourse this rule was bent if the service was garbage. People make very bad names for themselves and their "people" by doing stupid shit that could have been easily avoided.

Most of us buy into these social norms and defend them rigorously without giving much thought to the inherent flaws in the way we implement them....

I'll make a wild guess and say that the pro tippers amongst us rarely (if ever) tip the currier that brings our mail/packages, or tip the stewardess that wheels our meal over to us on a plane flight, or the gas station attendant that sometimes pump our gas, or the grocery bag person at the front of line bagging our food...What makes these services any less worthy of a tip?....

If these other industries start demanding tips will the tipper community comply?...or will they/we rationalize why we can't... Looking at it like this makes us all dicks/assholes if you truly believe that people who don't tip in restaurants are dicks/assholes....The practice of tipping isn't fair across the board so I can't go judging....Something to think about...

All those people get paid at least minimum wage. Servers get paid 2$ and hour.

Tipped workers make $2/hr yes but not all servers work as tipped workers. Plus the employer for tipped workers are suppose to make up the dollar difference if that worker didn't reach the minimum wage mark ($7.25/hr) in tips... So even tipped workers still make minimum wage (tip or no tip)...

You think my trip to the States costs nothing? Its the amount of money I'd spend on 2 vacations. I've saved all that for just this one vacation.

Im not forcing the servers to keep their underpaid jobs. Go find a better job. What kind of riddance is this. Forcing customers into tipping waiters/servers? Come on, go study and find a better job.

This might be cultural differences. But thats how I think about it. I'm not going to give away my hard earned money simply like that. No thank you.

Krevidy, tell the server as soon as she/he asks what you want to drink that you will not be leaving a tip and let me know how good your service is. I learned a long time ago, after working in the fast food industry, that you shouldn't fvck with people that server your food.

A restaurant owner mandate to provide good service for all their patrons supersedes a server's concerns about being tipped... No server want their boss being told by a customer that they provided horrible service....

Even worse no boss wants to hear that a customer's drink was tampered with because the server was angry...That's a possible lawsuit situation....So it's in the server's best interest to just do their job....

And that's why those kind of servers are pricks.

That's a restaurant I don't want to go to... The existing service, at least in this case, was lacking probably because servers knew their tips were secured with that mandatory gratuity clause...There is no real need to "work" for tips at this restaurant...Quite frankly that waiter should be reprimanded...

i work in the service industry iv done front of house and currently bar work, a tip is not nessessary but you will find atleast in good bars the barman or bar woman will go beyond their call of duty to get you the drink you want. Also in some countries england included your tax code is based on your work a waitress/waiter gets taxed more as its based on potential tips, its much bigger in america too. So back to the point you should always consider your tip but not always give i go by a simple rule, if i can afford it i will if i can't i dont

Tips are supposed to be an incentive for the server to do better work. Problem is, too many believe it is to be given regardless of service. If they do a good job, I tip more, if not, I tip less or not at all.

I agree! But should "tip" to be added automatically?
Or, be removed forever for all Restaurants? xD

how do you know whats better work if they are already giving it their all. Im a bartender, i try to make every customer the best drink i can, each cocktail i mix i taste if i dont think it is good i either adjust what goes in it slightly or scrap it to make it good. Yes i don't always get it right but thats when things become more simple you know what the customer wants. Now to me the tip isnt going to make me work any more harder but its nice to know that after that hard work it's been appreciated especially when i know the tax man is hot on my heels for this hidden revenue which i dont often get in my bar. Luckily i dont get taxed on my 'tips' but waiters/waitresses do.

So my point is unless you are a regular in which case you generally get a better service as they know you so can greet you, ask about your day, friends you have been there with before etc you will have no standard to base your service on, bad service is much easier to spot then good.

Wait... I have to pay for the food and its % Tax.

Now, I also need to worry about the tip which has a bulleted suggested % price added to it?

And If I dont tip I would be remembered as "that" guy, then would be served last - which would also end up having my food delivered half cold. And when I'm off my way out, cops would be waiting at the door?

WTF???

Uhmmm, no.

I have to admit. These are one of those painful days where I have to thank my mom for dragging my ass to the kitchen and lock me up until I know how to cook 10 recipes.
