iv used both intel and amd cpu's and i honestly never noticed a difference. i used an i7 and it seemed no faster then my amd 620 in normal window's tasks (maybe the i7 shaved a second or two off loading but is that worth the extra $200?). in games sure the i7 is faster but can you notice a difference if you don't have a fps display?
it depends what your using the computer for. if your gaming amd is the route to go because they sell good chips for cheaper then intel. if your doing CAD or something very cpu intensive get an intel like the i7.
You can't compare, cause AMD is a lot cheaper, find a CHEAP intel CPU that preforms better then AMD

as for his computer...200-400 depending on some things.
You didn't get 'ripped off'. You bought a pre-made computer which are always more expensive. The extended warranty you bought is a much better price than what they charge over here (canada) but is still unneeded.
You could save much more money or get a better set up if you built it yourself.

I built a better PC for my mom for like $250ish IIRC.

as for power supplies..well views on PSU's are very different for some, but I generally look for good brand name ones as I have had my share of cheap PSU mishaps.
