I'd love to see a source that puts numbers on how many people on welfare are abusing the system or using it fradulantly. Most of these people don't feel like not getting a job, most of them can't. They have disabilities, one of their loved ones has a disability that requires 24 hour care, they were in an accident at work, their company fired them, they have no benefits and their medical bills bankrupt them, they're single parents of multiple children, widowers, etc. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to provide these services, and not everyone is milking the system. There are freeloaders, obviously, but that's why we have social workers, to weed those people out. You don't like it so much, become a social worker and investigate welfare abuse.
You pay for social security so your parents can retire. Our children will pay for our retirement/social security checks.

We shopped in thrift stores for new clothes, we paid local farms (because it's cheaper) to pick vegetables from the fields, my mom and I cleaned people's houses on the weekends (she worked M-F) just so we could make ends meet. People like us work damn hard. You want to spit in someone's face? Try the corporate CEOs who lose their company's money and STILL get million dollar bonuses. A terrorist act, like Xem tried to tell you, has the goal of instilling fear in a population. Terrorists are attempting to influence a government or organization to act in a certain way, and they have a motive other than pure hate. What he did was a hate crime, and like Xem told you, multiple homicide.

Which is why social workers and investigations are a good idea. But scrapping the welfare system because of a small minority of people who take advantage hurts the far greater majority of people who actually need the services. There are people and corporations who cost us a great deal more money than housing murderers and welfare recipients. But they have lobbyists and PR reps who spin their bullshit in the media. When was the last time you saw or heard a positive story about welfare helping keep poverty line families from starving?

I graduated 4th in my class, got myself a full ride and additional scholarships to help pay for my books and housing. I've also had a job since I was 12. I'm not a fool, but I don't take insults lightly, especially not when people have misconceptions about people who need welfare.

Like I said before, you want to mad at someone, why not be mad at companies like AIG or GM who took BILLIONS of dollars of your taxpayer money.

Sounded pretty mad to me. You don't normally farking hate stuff without being mad about do you? And yea, I have a job...now. I don't need it now, but if we hadn't had it when I was younger we would have been in serious trouble.

If your family is already poor, you should be defending it. What if something happened to one of your parents and you didn't have welfare to fall back on?

I do agree that people have to make the effort to find a job and balance their lifestyle and spending with their income. Some people don't but there are those who are trying to support their family, help their relatives overseas, pay for immigration petitions, or are mentally/physically unfit who are unable to find a job right away after being "let go." Some people just need a little push. Scraping the entire system off is a bad idea - it equates to incompetency and plain laziness.

My dad was laid off and my mom's job didn't pay that well because she didn't have a degree. When he did find another job, it didn't pay as well as the previous one. Both my grandparents got sick, grandpa passed first, and then my grandma got sick, had to go through chemo, and my mom had to quit her job to take care of her because we couldn't afford a nurse. Dad lost his second job when the company he worked for went under. They didn't give any of the employees any advanced notice either. Decided to start his own business when he couldn't find another job, took a while to get it off the ground, that's when it got really hairy.

We didn't have spending problems, we weren't in debt. My parents didn't drive nice cars, we didn't have nice things like jewelry or big screen TVs. The economy tanked in the late 80's until the dotcom bs. We did have a nice house, but dad built it with my grandpa and my uncle and their friends.

Not really. Whatever savings they had went toward medical bills. My grandpa was a chauffeur, and I don't think my grandma ever worked. In her defense, she was born in 1913, her generation of women didn't really work or drive.

But now theres opportunities to do that at every turn, everywhere reminders to think for the future. The systems old, expensive, leaky and unnecessary.
