Actually, the big bang states that the universe goes through a series of "tides" in which the universe is condensed so tightly packed that a grain of sand would look like the sun comparred to it, and that all the mass is contained in it. Its explodes from energy and the universe if flung out in all directions. As we are now, the universe is still expanding, but is possibly slowing down. Obviously if this were true, the universe would not stop expanding let alone begin to retract in a couple hundred billion years.
