What is the purpose of having a gap?

Post by Ezra »

I find that a lot of people talk about having a gap between mastery levels and character levels, but when people ask questions about it, nobody really explains it. They just state that it is a good thing to do. Can somebody explain to me in relative detail what is the purpose of having a gap and how to properly do it?

BTW - I do not have good gear so I am not talking about level 16 SP farming. It would help if someone would quickly go over what's the most efficient way to level a character up normally while utilizing a gap.

Thanks in advance,
Ezra

A gap gives you more sxp, which gives more sp, which allows you to level your skills. It also gives you less xp, which makes it harder to level with a gap.

Okay, so what's a good gap to have?

And just to clarify my understanding... If I have level 10 Fire, when would I start and stop receiving the extra sp?

A good gap is one that allows you to get all the skills you want to get. Generally a four gap will do that up to level 5x, then you'll start running out of sp since the higher level the skill, the more sp it costs. You can go use the character builder to find out how much sp you'll need http://nivlam.com/char/

Also if your fire is at 10 and you're level 10, you have a zero gap and will receive the least amount of sp. If you level to 11 and leave your fire at 10, you'll have a 1 gap and get more sp and so on and so forth. The highest necessary gap is 9, after that you don't get anymore sp.

Let's say you get to max level with no gap the entire time. Do you stop getting sp and do you therefore end up with less total sp than someone who had a gap the entire time leveling up?

And also, it's just your highest mastery right? If my lightning is a bit behind, then I can feel free to level that one up while I'm keeping a gap between my highest mastery level and my character level, right?

Yes it is the highest mastery that counts. And you never stop getting sp, you just get more with a gap.

That's mostly the purpose of this game. The game requires you to have a gap between your char level and masteries level, so that enough points can be distributed to those masteries level.

But just to clarify once again, at MAX level you still get sp, right? So you can't gimp your character and be unable to finish your build at max level?
