And about male using female pics, so what? If they think the image looks cool, they'll use it, isn't that the reason most of we choose our avatars? I don't see that tiny image as my face, if i wanna post my face there's a "Who are you thread", that image can be whatever looks good in our opinion or simply represents our personality, even when the sex of the character in the image don't match with the one of the person using it.
A very good example imo is for gothic people, through a drawing you can symbolize that dark, mystic, lonely, seductive and dangerous feeling that "gothic" is supposed to mean, and, i think, women represent that feeling (along with the use of good backgrounds, shadows, lights, etc) better than man, in most cases.
So i have no problem with those avatars, each one of us has a style...
