If I buy the original WoW will a 30 day play-time come with it?
And what if I buy the Battlechest?
And also, how do the zones work, if I have just the first WoW will I see the areas affected by cataclysm differently/will I see cata players?

yes

yes, it comes with vanilla, and BC. Only vanilla has the 30 day play time with it

I'm not quite sure, but i'm pretty sure you can see the zones just like everybody else, you just can't access some of them.

Re: Question
All changes in Cata have happened, you are going to see the world farked up, so technically, when you go to outlands and Northrend, you will be traveling through time in sorts.
You will not have access to things everything BC+, will have the 60 cap, many zones will be unaccessable to you, and it will just be crappy

Re: Question
And if I buy the first one then play for 30 days then take a break for like two months and then buy BC will it come with 30 days? Or should I just buy the Battlechest

No, you don't. You only get the 30 days with vanilla, not with any expansions.
